stylist notes

The top: Apply body types, do you see the v-neck on that sweater? Yep, that's for you. Also, the splits at both sides of the hem on the sweater allow for the fabric to fall away from the waist which will help balance out your proportions.

The bottom: The boot-cut jean is your friend. You could go with something a bit more distressed, or even a grey option, but we're keeping it true blue and simple with this look because we have a fun flat that we want to feature and focus on. Know this silhouette, find the perfect pair for you (Members, you can always start by shopping our edited Closet, see below) and buy a couple of pairs if you can. One for flats, one for feels. Keep these, take care of them (always wash your jeans inside out to prevent fading), and you'll have them forever. Unless of course, the brand you go with constructed a crappy jean, it's very possible. In which case, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT and look at the return policy when you buy. You should not have to keep something that cost you money and is poorly made. No ma'm. This comes from a former luxury retailer who saw it all.

The rest: The flat will peek out from under the hem of that boot-cut jean and that's just fine. You can show a little personality with that and not take it too far for something you want to wear out and about on a weekday. Go neutral or even with a different color if animal prints are not your thing (i.e. you're not from Jersey or Dallas for that matter; yes, we're generalizing but hey, it's true). A classic neutral tote, this time in a putty color that will add a little unexpected edge compared to your basic black or brown, works well here. Finally, a couple of key jewelry additions round it all out.

The ONE thing you need to know: If the sweater has the v-neck, flares out at the hem, but is too bulky for your frame, pass on it. Go with something that has a bit more stretch to it, that will hug your curves at the torso, but also has a little volume at the hem to bell out. That's the silhouette you want to go for if something like this sweater has a swallow-you-whole effect when you try it on.

If something's sold out, you can check out other options in the Closet, just remember, you need to be a Member to get the keys!

A loose cowl-neck is a great way to  add a little drama and bring the eye upward. The hem on this sweater drapes unevenly which should prevent it from falling too far below the waist and over the hips. If that happens, pass. Make sure the sweater hits slightly below the waist and not any longer The cowl neck is further exaggerated with the addition of a printed infinity scarf. Here's your chance to fold in some color on this Fall-centric look.

The wash on this skinny jean is clean with very little distressing and no pockets popping out where you don't want them to, a key detail for Pear Body Types. Make sure the wash is medium to dark. You could also switch it up with a black wash.

The navy suede ballet flat is another small way to add some subtle color while keeping everything pulled together. It's in those tiny details that you can make a look your own. A woven chocolate brown bag is neutral enough to work into almost any look, and this satchel is large enough to hold anything you'd need on the weekend. Finally, a few rings to add some hardware into the picture. Layer on more rings or bracelets to add more 'oomph.' With the scarf and cowl neck, a necklace and earring would just get covered up so you can leave them out.

Look-spiration | Cozy Sweater Styling Indecision Means Bonus Looks for You

This is not a one-and-done kind of fashion situation people. Nope. It's all over the place. Ok I'm exaggerating, it's a double-take because this girl couldn't make up her mind when it came to cozy sweater options. What else is new?

Here's what's up: Inspiration hit via an image from the latest Lucky Magazine, (read: a random shot of Blake Lively nestled in the lower lefthand corner of this month's glossy caught my eye) & it called for a re-creation moment.

Cue: My Insta-inspiration (click to follow The StyleShaker on Instagram)

That said, I couldn't make up my mind between the J. Crew v-neck and the more voluminous Jonathan Saunders option. Both fit the fashion bill, bringing volume to the top half of the equation in relatively soft neutral tones, and yet, the overall look is different. J.Crew keeps it classic, it's what they do, it's why we love them. Saunders on the other hand, adds volume and shape with a keen attention to detail that usually comes with a higher-end label, let alone price point. Both are gorge, and both needed to have their cameo:

Fashion inspiration, or what I lovingly call, 'look-spiration,' is all fine and good. Actually it's more than fine and good. Inspiration is kind of a big deal. We all need it from time to time, to stay fresh, keep us on our toes, and above all, push us to think (or even better, take action) outside of our comfort zones. Inspiration comes in so many forms, you don't have to look to hard, you just have to keep your eyes open.

Today, inspiration comes to you courtesy of two style-by-number looks. But what to wear is only half of the story. A great half, but it's just 50%. The other half, the reason I've been able to reach triple digits on my roster of amazing personal (and virtual) styling clients, is because knowing what to wear won't get you anywhere unless you get the 'how to wear it for your body type' part of the equation.

You can certainly have one (what to wear) without the other (how to wear it for your body type) IF you're into having a full closet and nothing to wear, or even worse, wearing the same 10% of what's hanging in your closet on heavy rotation. Go for it, but I don't recommend that route.

Try this instead: First things first, we need to define your body type (pear, apple, hourglass, or rectangle; sign up for emails to get priority access to not only the Weekend Warrior Shopping Lists but also I'm compiling the sickest, simplest, most on-point fashion guide to help you figure out what your 'type' is). Got it? Ok good. Now that we know what we're working with, the next question is, will this look work for you?

Rectangles, you've officially found your happy place. The length of the sweater on this one makes it a tough call for Hourglass and Pear shapes. But Rectangles, you have the ability to pull of the additional volume on top as long as you keep the streamlined leg and a heel. I would say lean more towards the pink Jonathan Saunders option, but both work well for your shape.

Now, on to the Apple ladies out there. The v-neck action and emphasis on the hem of both sweaters works well for you, pulling the eye-line down and balancing out proportions. The only major change for the Apples out there would be to swap out the skinny leg for a boot cut option. It will keep proportions in-line. For my petite Apples, go with the J.Crew option, less bulk will be key, and be sure that the hem doesn't fall too far below your hips (too far will stunt you a bit, never fun).

Hourglasses, you could do this but the volume on top will just add to any bust-line your working with, and not in a flattering way. Keep to a more structured look to stay on-point when it comes to your silhouette. What am I talking about when I say 'structured'? Seamed details, a more body-conscious fit, something that will hug you, but not too tight.

And finally, Pears, the length of the sweaters will be a make or break for you here. Since both of these sweaters will hang closer to your natural hipline (drawing the eye right where you don't want it to go), you should look in the other direction. A slimed down sweater that hits at the waist would work, just be sure to keep the skinny leg dark and always, I mean always, wear some sort of a heel in this scenario. Extend the vertical eye-line and all is right with the world.

Bring On the Cashmere Sweaters: One More Spot on the Fall Essentials Shopping List Where You Should Invest

When you see sweaters being featured in the fashion industry, the descriptor 'cozy' usually finds it's way into a cutline. I don't buy it, UNLESS they're talk about a cashmere sweater. Do you really think snuggling up to a 100% wool acrylic pullover is a pleasant feeling, you know, super cozy? Unless you have nerve-ending issues with your skin and feel nothing, you're aware of the itch factor involved when it comes to acrylic wool.

It's not worth it. Take the money you'd put into a wool sweater, save yourself the overall sensation that you're wearing a suit of stinging nettles, and invest in something that lives up to the word 'cozy,' a.k.a. cashmere. It can be a blend, just make sure it's more 70:30 and less 20:80 (cashmere:other fabric).

To get the cashmere sweater shopping momentum going, take a look at the Top 10 picks in the category that go from basic to print. A basic cashmere sweater is a must, the prints just add to the mix.
