Fashion Mad-Lib: I'm a Rectangle Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear this Weekend

The Rectangle Body type can handle the draping going on with the cowl neckline and the volume on the sweater. But if there's too little structure on top AND bottom, then you fall into a column-like look. Cue: the streamlined jean to hug a bit where you want it to and a scarf to also help balance out proportions. With some height, the flats work. If you want to dress it up or elongate, go with a heel via a pump, sandal, or boot. The rest of the look is all about keeping the accessories neutral.

The lace detail on the top is on-point for Pear Body Types. You can bring the drama on the top half of the fashion equation every time as it balances out your proportions with your bottom half. The layer of the army jacket on top of the feminine lace is a mix of masculine/femme, but when it comes to working with your body types, this look shows you how you can layer up and stick with the idea of adding to your top half to balance out the bottom half. Keep in mind, it's not about adding bulk or extra volume, and definitely make sure tops don't fall past your hips.

The super-saturated, dark wash skinny jean is one solid color and dark enough that it will streamline while keeping things casual. If you want to elongate further with the skinny jean, you can add a pump or heeled boot.

The rest of the look is all about keeping accessories simple. You already have plenty going on with the top and the jacket, so keep the rest toned down. The d'orsay flat is a classic black, but with some subtle hardware on the straps. It's an easy way to add some interest to a basic black flat. The sunnies are a classic Ray Ban wayfarer, but you could always swap things out with an aviator silhouette. The ring and the tote bring the look into focus without distracting from anything.

Look-spiration | Cozy Sweater Styling Indecision Means Bonus Looks for You

This is not a one-and-done kind of fashion situation people. Nope. It's all over the place. Ok I'm exaggerating, it's a double-take because this girl couldn't make up her mind when it came to cozy sweater options. What else is new?

Here's what's up: Inspiration hit via an image from the latest Lucky Magazine, (read: a random shot of Blake Lively nestled in the lower lefthand corner of this month's glossy caught my eye) & it called for a re-creation moment.

Cue: My Insta-inspiration (click to follow The StyleShaker on Instagram)

That said, I couldn't make up my mind between the J. Crew v-neck and the more voluminous Jonathan Saunders option. Both fit the fashion bill, bringing volume to the top half of the equation in relatively soft neutral tones, and yet, the overall look is different. J.Crew keeps it classic, it's what they do, it's why we love them. Saunders on the other hand, adds volume and shape with a keen attention to detail that usually comes with a higher-end label, let alone price point. Both are gorge, and both needed to have their cameo:

Fashion inspiration, or what I lovingly call, 'look-spiration,' is all fine and good. Actually it's more than fine and good. Inspiration is kind of a big deal. We all need it from time to time, to stay fresh, keep us on our toes, and above all, push us to think (or even better, take action) outside of our comfort zones. Inspiration comes in so many forms, you don't have to look to hard, you just have to keep your eyes open.

Today, inspiration comes to you courtesy of two style-by-number looks. But what to wear is only half of the story. A great half, but it's just 50%. The other half, the reason I've been able to reach triple digits on my roster of amazing personal (and virtual) styling clients, is because knowing what to wear won't get you anywhere unless you get the 'how to wear it for your body type' part of the equation.

You can certainly have one (what to wear) without the other (how to wear it for your body type) IF you're into having a full closet and nothing to wear, or even worse, wearing the same 10% of what's hanging in your closet on heavy rotation. Go for it, but I don't recommend that route.

Try this instead: First things first, we need to define your body type (pear, apple, hourglass, or rectangle; sign up for emails to get priority access to not only the Weekend Warrior Shopping Lists but also I'm compiling the sickest, simplest, most on-point fashion guide to help you figure out what your 'type' is). Got it? Ok good. Now that we know what we're working with, the next question is, will this look work for you?

body type img

Rectangles, you've officially found your happy place. The length of the sweater on this one makes it a tough call for Hourglass and Pear shapes. But Rectangles, you have the ability to pull of the additional volume on top as long as you keep the streamlined leg and a heel. I would say lean more towards the pink Jonathan Saunders option, but both work well for your shape.

Now, on to the Apple ladies out there. The v-neck action and emphasis on the hem of both sweaters works well for you, pulling the eye-line down and balancing out proportions. The only major change for the Apples out there would be to swap out the skinny leg for a boot cut option. It will keep proportions in-line. For my petite Apples, go with the J.Crew option, less bulk will be key, and be sure that the hem doesn't fall too far below your hips (too far will stunt you a bit, never fun).

Hourglasses, you could do this but the volume on top will just add to any bust-line your working with, and not in a flattering way. Keep to a more structured look to stay on-point when it comes to your silhouette. What am I talking about when I say 'structured'? Seamed details, a more body-conscious fit, something that will hug you, but not too tight.

And finally, Pears, the length of the sweaters will be a make or break for you here. Since both of these sweaters will hang closer to your natural hipline (drawing the eye right where you don't want it to go), you should look in the other direction. A slimed down sweater that hits at the waist would work, just be sure to keep the skinny leg dark and always, I mean always, wear some sort of a heel in this scenario. Extend the vertical eye-line and all is right with the world.

Style Tutorial #5 | 1 T by Alexander Wang Red Button Front Shirt, 5 Ways to Wear It

Style Tutorial #5 started at the sight of T by Alexander Wang's, tomato-red, button front, crepe shirt. It's simple, clean, colorful, and classic which means, editing down the tutorial to just five looks was a challenge. This video could have gone on for days people...Days.

t by alexander wang shirt img

Often times, whether I'm doing a one-on-one consultation or group Styling Session, guests and clients ask me what 'essentials' they need to have in their closets for the season. It's kind of the million dollar question.
I've found that this 'core closet' as I call it, is really the key to every, single, wardrobe. Having the perfect basics for your body type (and knowing where to shop for them) as a fashion foundation allows you to tap into and wear one hundred (not just twenty) percent of what's in your closet.
This shirt from T by Alexander Wang is one of those basics. Sure, it's in a bold color, but it's not magenta, it's not highlighter-lime, it's a rich, tomato red which to me, can be as neutral as navy, olive, grey, or even taupe. It's just a more exciting way to wear a classic silhouette. Equally as versatile.
Don't see it yet? Good. The point is to show you something you may not have thought of, but your part of this is to remain a bit open to the possibilities. You've got nothing to lose.
That's what the Style Tutorials are all about: showing you new ways to wear pieces you see out in the shopping stratosphere so you can take the inspiration and incorporate it inside the walls of your own closet. Should you need a helping hand, a style translator to help you fine-tune your fashion language, I'm always here.
For now, it's video time. Take a peek at the latest, the five ways to wear this one sophisticated shirt:

Style Tutorial #3 | 1 Joie Top, 8 Ways to Wear It

Time for another StyleShaker Style Tutorial. Put down the blue books and No. 2 pencils people. This is all about soaking up some inspiration. No pop quizzes. Promise.

The Joie Berkeley silk top was a recent find that I had to play with and serve up, Mix Master style (i.e. think of Cher's closet from the movie Clueless and you'll understand a bit more of what I mean when I throw down terms like 'mix' and 'master' all in the same sentence this early on a Monday morning). The bottom line on this top? It's just too versatile not to create looks with. Let alone the fact that it's a universally flattering silhouette.

First things first, here a quick intro, from me, to you, on what today's post is all about:

Like I said, one top (from Joie) and eight, count 'em, eight ways to wear it. Here's the Lookbook Video:

PEARS: You're all about Looks- 2,4,5, and 8. The trick here is to balance out your silhouette with what you're wearing on top, AND, keep a heel in the equation to elongate. So, if you're going the skinny jean route, the Joie top is a perfect piece to pull off the look. Leave it loose and untucked. And again, keep a higher heel to keep extending the eye-line vertically.
RECTANGLES: All skate. You can pick and choose your favorite look, 1-8, and try it on.
HOURGLASSES: Look 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are your friend. Look one is too much fabric for an hourglass silhouette. You can pull it off, but it's not the best look to accentuate your classic shape. Look 3 is going to flare a bit at the waist so if you're watching your hip action, go for the pencil skirt look as an alternate.
APPLES: Finally, my Apple ladies. Looks 3, 5, and 7 are going to be the looks you should gravitate towards. They are the perfect mix of clothing and accessories that will help balance out your inverted triangle proportions seamlessly.

Silk shortsleeve blouses are just one fashion category of sooooo sooooo many. There's always more where that came from. Check out the pieces that are pulled each week while digging for my clients. They're all lined up, all of the favorite picks from my favorite shopping spots on-line, in the StyleShaker Closet.

Style Tutorial #1 | How to Wear Tank Tops. 1 Rebecca Taylor Tank, 5 Ways to Wear It

Style Tutorial #1 comes into focus and shows you how to wear tank tops. In this case, it's all about a printed, floaty tank top (courtesy of Rebecca Taylor) just in time for rising temps. One tank, five ways to wear it, and that's just me warming up...
I decided to bring in a little Style 101 to the StyleShaker via some inspired videos that are short, sweet, to the point, and remarkably reminiscent of Cher's closet computer from the movie 'Clueless.' Seen it? Know the one I'm talking about? Have you been dying to figure out how to do that for yourself since the late nineties like I have?
Ok fine, maybe I'm alone in my obsession, but it was worth every minute of analysis when it came to figuring out how to replicate it.
Here's my version, an approach on how to (and a couple of how-not-to moments) wear one pick, in this case, a Rebecca Taylor tank that's at the top of the summer shopping list. Click play and see pieces slide in and out of the picture so you can literally watch how many looks can come from this one, incredibly versatile tank.
It's about optimizing your closet, a concept that is the foundation of my approach with every one of my clients (get the details on what I do here) I have that comes to me asking for some inspiration on new ways to wear what they have hanging in their closet. This is also about bringing it back down to earth. These looks are polished and fashion-forward, but above all, they are wearable and approachable for real women out there. That's the goal, SO, enough of me going on and on, check out the video and keep scrolling because there's plenty more to go thru here, read: see how each works for your body type.

Here's the big picture when it comes to how to wear tank tops, a summer essential. One tank, five ways to wear it, and go:

look 1: This look works well for every body type, there are just a few tweaks to make in each when it comes to accessories. For the Pears out there, this is a GREAT look. Keep the heel height up there and avoid any shoes that cut you off at the ankles (i.e. thick strap gladiator sandals, etc). Rectangles, you're good to go. Hourglasses, if you're fuller on top, a great way to streamline would be to incorporate a streamlined blazer (black, maybe a few sequins for evening to pop the look, or just keep it clean) as a layer over the tank to reel it in and not throw proportions out of whack. Same with our Apple ladies out there.
look 2: This is a universally flattering look. The proportion of the floaty tank back to a clean, polished trouser with a slight flare at the hem is a killer combo. Apples & Pears: Here's a good time to layer on a cardigan if you want to add some coverage or elongate a bit, just make sure it falls to the hip, is tight around the arm, and drapes across the bust easily (nothing too stiff).
look 3: This look you will either love or not be able to look at due to the shorts factor. If you're an Hourglass or Apple, be careful with this one. You don't want to accentuate too much volume on top so you could always substitute something a bit more curve-hugging on top, or even just a chambray button-front shirt to add a bit more structure to the look. Hourglass, Pear, and Rectangle, you're all good to go here. If you're completely shorts-averse, throw in a pair of white skinny jeans and head on your way!
look 4: This is almost universally flattering. Almost. Apples and possibly larger busted Hourglass ladies, bring in another layer, blazer, cardi, something fitted to cinch things in a bit and add structure, OR substitute a tank that is still flowy but with an empire waist or cinching incorporated into it to keep the proportions looking how you want them to. The rest of the silhouettes can have at it. Flats are ok, but not ideal with the higher volume on top and skinny leg.
look 5: Finally, the same goes for this look although, the straight-leg, or really, slightly flared jean, makes things so easy for every shape. This is going to add shape to the Rectangles out there, keep things proportioned for the Pears and Hourglasses, and actually do the same for the Apples.

There's always more where that came from. Check out the pieces that are pulled each week while digging for my clients. They're all lined up, all of the favorite picks from my favorite shopping spots on-line, in the StyleShaker Closet.

How to Wear Distressed Skinny Jeans + Neon

The distressed look is one thing. Throw that in with a skinny jean and you're on a whole other fashion level with the message you're sending out. I don't mind a distressed jean, I actually happen to love them. But, there's a time and a place.

I have a pair of grey, pre-worn, skinny jeans from Genetic denim that I found on Gilt at a steal. When I wear them, I usually put together a more polished look on top to balance things out a bit. I always, and I mean always, get compliments on those jeans. There's a way to balance out the distressed look with a few key accessories so you keep an edgy vibe, but don't go overboard. It's a happy medium that I think hits the nail on the head. See what I mean with today's look that covers how to wear distressed skinny jeans:

The StyleShaker

The blouse is a saturated take on a classic baseball tee. It's simple, colorful, and classic (outside of the neon magenta of course). Love it. The colors on that top actually pop perfectly back to the medium, deep blue wash of those jeans. Any bright will go well with them, or just your basic neutrals like black, white, and beige. You have options, which is a beautiful thing.

Since the top is talking at a higher volume than the other pieces in the equation, I kept the rest of the accessories pretty neutral. Cue, the sandals. A classic flat sandal in a great carmel brown that you can work into any look for Spring. Instead of going with a brown bag, which would have been expected here, the Chloe shoulder bag spoke to me. It can be over the shoulder or worn cross-body. Either way, that stone color is divine and ridiculously versatile. You'll wear this bag all over the place. Handbags are where I do think you need to invest. I'll always stick to that, UNLESS you're looking at something very trendy or a clutch.

Finally, a couple pieces of jewelry to polish it all off. The MARC by Marc Jacobs watch is the perfect sporty addition. I happen to never wear a watch, but if I did, I would own this one. It's beyond reasonable in price, sure a ton of people have it, but it's spot-on and hits that happy point between contemporary and classic so you know you'll be wearing it forever.

I'm biased on rings in the sense that I always thing, the bigger the better. This caged, gold pick from Aurelie Bidermann is bold but the cut outs keep it a bit more toned down and interesting.

Which body type does this look work for you ask?

body type img

It is a pretty universal look. The only thing I would add here is, if you're a pear or an apple, and if you are more petite height wise, you should swap out the flat for a slight heel to elongate and balance out proportions. Easy enough to do.

Love the jeans but they're not quite what you were going for? What about the top? Love it, but the thought of magenta makes you squirm? Totally, I get it. I can't win 'em all with every look, and actually, that's not the point. If you're inspired, the whole point is to take pieces from this look and incorporate them into your own life if you're wanting to pull it off. Shopping for new additions is a part of that, and it can be overwhelming (let alone time-consuming), so head over to the StyleShaker Closet where I pull my favorite picks from my favorite sites every week and edit them all for you to shop. It's the perfect launching off point for any shopper looking to simplify a bit (click the image below):

In the mean time, I keep speaking about inspiration so obviously, I had to give you a few more curated picks I found from the web to keep you motivated and thinking. I do this for myself all the time, whenever I'm in need of an update or refresher, so it's only natural that I want to share the love with you. Product Review | Steve Madden's Realove Ankle Strap Sandal

It's product review time, and the latest purchase I'm following up on are the Steve Madden ankle strap sandals.

I was packing for my recent trip to San Francisco when it occurred to me that, for every evening look I put in the suitcase, I couldn't come up with a pair of comfortable black shoes that I can actually walk long distances (not to mention, up and down some particularly hairy and dangerous hills, especially after having spent the last ten years living on the ridiculously flat-as-a-pancake land that covers Dallas, Texas) in.

So, naturally I went on the hunt for a shoe that would get a lot of use, whatever city my virtual styling and shopping business takes me to. Low and behold, the latest addition to my closet that I would definitely qualify as an essential to any wardrobe:

steve madden sandal img

Here's how I saw it on-line at Amazon. No major differences which isn't too surprising. You can't really over-style a basic black, ankle strap sandal.

as seen on amazon

Here's the review. I'm going with a simple, three-question evaluation system:

1. What do I like about the shoe? Easy, they go with everything I own in the closet. I tried them on and they're actually comfortable to boot (no pun intended; they're sandals after all). The look is exactly what I was going for, minimal, with a little 'oomph' courtesy of the thin metallic strap going across the toe. The heel height is fine for me (4.5"), and the pitch (angle the shoe has my heel at) is also beyond bearable. It's high, don't get me wrong, but they're definitely easy to walk in. Plus, one more thing to adore is the ankle strap. The shoes stay on my feet, right where they're supposed to. I threw in a little foot cushion to make sure I could stay comfy, and they've done wonders. Sometimes I'll go up a half size for comfort, but I stuck with an 8, and they work perfectly (true to size fit).  One more pro, I bought them through Amazon, I'm a Prime member, so free two-day shipping is definitely a massive bonus. For $79.95, I know I'll be getting plenty of use out of them. No question.

2. What don't I like about the shoe? Right, you should know this but it bears repeating, I am not paid one cent to review this merchandise. Integrity people, that's what I'm talking about here. I don't get paid to write the review, I don't have the product sent to me, I'm just an industry insider who believes that you should get what you pay for, i.e. value. That said, here is some honest feedback about the 'cons' on this sandal.

You really do need to go out and buy a little foot cushion, especially for the toe bed. The heel height means you'll be putting a little extra pressure there, and with no platform, there's very little buffering between your foot and the surface you're walking on. When it's the sidewalks of San Fran, or just standing on a marble floor during a house party for a few hours, you will need a little lovin in the way of a foot pad. Trust me on that one. Save yourself the pain. And now I'm getting nit picky...The buckle on the ankle strap on the right shoe seems to wander off to the other side of my foot. The strap isn't sewn in place, so it moves around your ankle. Is it uncomfortable? Nope. Still, it's odd looking to have on buckle hitting the outside of the ankle and another buckle hitting the inside of the ankle. Odd, but true. It has only been a month since I've had them so the heel caps have held up.

Usually I have an issue with this as I've been known to have a pretty hard walk. I hit the floor with a vengeance, not sure why, but I've been told people can hear me coming a mile away. It must have something to do with finally being able to get away with wearing heels after years of trying on shoes in my mother's closet, only to have to take them off before I went to school. I take pride in rocking a heel, you'll rarely see me in flats, so when I walk, I really walk. Unfortunately, this also means the consistent need for replacement of heel caps. So far, so good on these sandals, but it's just a matter of time. I wouldn't hold that against them though.

Other than that, the fit is fine, the construction, solid enough for the price, and I can wear them for more than a few hours without holding back tears. Those days are done by the way, no more shoes that make me want to well up at the sheer thought of throwing them onto my feet.

3. Am I keeping these shoes? Yes. They're sticking around and have now found a new home in my closet. I'm happy to report that they're getting along well with the rest of the 'crew.'

Finding the right shoe is step 1, figuring out how to wear it using what's in my closet is the second half of the equation. This is exactly what I do for my clients, but it started with me.

Here are two looks to inspire ways to wear these new additions to my closet:

This is a more casual take on how to wear the sandals. Mind you, for San Fran, this would probably be considered a bit more dressed up. Potato, pot-ah-toe. I didn't put a red lipstick in there, but I love the idea of it for evening, or day for that matter. Why not?

Today's Pick, Jason Wu's Striped Sweater & How to Wear It

I love it when the two worlds of What to Wear & How to Wear It come together, especially in one little fashion post. Today's inspiration comes courtesy of Jason Wu and one super-impressive striped sweater. See what I'm talking about below. Here's what to wear:

Jason Wu Striped Crochet-Knit Cotton-Blend Sweater

And now it's on to how to wear it:

Like I mentioned earlier, it isn't just about what to wear, it's all about how to wear it. Do you wear about an eighth of what's actually hanging in your closet, a. because you don't know what you have back there, b. because you don't know how to wear what you do have, or c. because you don't have the time or brain power at six in the morning to figure it out (I guess I should put a d. all of the above)? You're not alone.

Never ask, 'what am I going to wear?' again by getting on the list my clients have already discovered, the What to Wear Weekly Lookbook list. Check it all out, and see what you get for under $20, or just click away to get some Lookbook inspiration:

What to Wear | 5 Looks That Will Inspire You To Change It Up a Bit

What to wear? You've got options. I love creating looks, especially for my clients when I get to use actual picks from their personal closets and show them countless ways to wear them they would have never dreamt up. I started doing it in my own closet as a method of survival while working in the land of luxury fashion. Ten years and hundreds of looks later, I now get to share what I love and help simplify life a bit for clients who can now spend the energy they were putting into 'what am I going to wear today?' on actually living their lives. They can walk into their day feeling good about what they have on, and consequently, feel good about themselves. It's a win-win.

Styling 'mush moment' aside... Sometimes I just cant stop creating these looks and a few favorites end up without their rightful cameo on the site or in a client's What to Wear Weekly Lookbook for one reason or another. So, now's their time, and no one is stealing their thunder. Check out five looks that will hopefully inspire you to switch things up a bit with what you have hanging in your own closet...

Split Screen | 1 J. Crew Bateau Neck Sweater, 2 Ways to Wear It

The split screen is a simple, style equation: 1 J.Crew Bateau neck sweater, 2 ways to wear it. Easy, peasy.

I had to hold myself back on this one, go figure, the editor is editing. I could easily work this classic sweater, with it's ridiculously (universally) flattering neckline and sophisticated silhouette, into countless looks. It's all about seeing the potential in one piece and making it work for you, or go the extra fashion mile if you will. You just need a little inspiration to warm things up and start to see four looks where you only saw one before all this.

For now, I'm keeping it short and sweet with two looks that range from wear-to-work, to something a bit more casual for day. Let's get started:

Like I said, one sweater, two ways to wear it. First up, look number one, a simple daytime combo that keeps a clean foundation giving the pink-drenched 3.1 Phillip Lim satchel all of the focus, as if anything within a three foot radius could steal it's thunder. Pop of pink aside, the best part about this ensemble is that it can go from day to evening with a simple shoe swap. Throw the quilted leather flats into the satchel, slip on some heels, and you're ready for cocktails.

source: 1. J. Crew Collection Cashmere Bateau Sweater (, 2. J Brand Denim 811 Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans (, 3. Vince Camuto Fawna Flat (, 4. Campbell Knuckle Floating Ring (, 4. 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Satchel (

Super-chic & perfectly polished. Round two on ways to wear this sweater falls in fashion line with a classic work look. Ok fine, this is what I would call a work look having spent the last decade in the fashion industry. So sure, for some this may seem slightly warped, but believe me, if you're looking at this and thinking, "oh my god I love this, but there's no way I could pull that off, whoa, those heels are ridiculous," think again (oh, and trust me, you can find a lower pump out there, start here). There's no reason why you can't bend outside of your personal style comfort zone and have a little fun amidst the craziness of your day, actually I encourage it. After all, the Split Screen is all about playing with your clothes and getting inspired.

source: 1. J. Crew Collection Cashmere Bateau Sweater (, 2. Marc By Marc Jacobs Jackie Camel Mélange Wool/Cashmere Pencil Skirt (,  3. Charlotte Olympia Natalia Lace-Up Ankle Bootie (, 4. Chloe Alice Springs Large Handbag In Husky White (, 5. Kendra Scott Della Earring  (

One Split Screen down, and there's still plenty where that came from. See more on what to wear, how to wear it, and where to shop.

Split Screen | 2 Ways to Wear Iro's 'Kristen' Jacket

Today's styling Split Screen, is all about taking one, fabulous, lust-worthy Iro jacket (I mean, the collar, I'm all over the collar), and showing you two ways to wear it. Trust me, I could keep going but there's this thing called consulting that gets in the way sometimes.

That said, I'll keep it simple. One piece, two ways to wear it. The options are always there, use this as a little inspiration to guide you on how to wear what you have hanging in your closet:

Look one is all about a little polish. The jacket was practically begging for a pencil skirt. The grey/navy combination is effortlessly chic, in any situation, on any body. The collar on the Iro jacket is noteworthy, definitely, and adds some interest to the look, but that wasn't enough for me, so I threw in a pair of red, leopard print, kitten heel pumps. They speak volumes, but not at too high of a volume, which is exactly what I was going for.

1/IRO Kristen Jacket (, 2/Reiss Simia Textured Bodycon Skirt (, 3/Lodis Grey Python Print Leather Convertible Satchel (, 4/Loeffler Randall Tamsin Classic Pump (, 5/Giles & Brother Cortina Leather And Brass Cuff (

And now on to look 2, the more casual of the two.  Colored denim was in order, and for good reason. The grey, back to this washed, plum color on the Mih skinny jeans works well. You could go with a basic blue dark wash, but this is way more fun don't you think? That said, if this isn't 'you,' and you wouldn't feel good in the ensemble, go with what you know works. It's about you feeling confident walking out the door, not trying to fit into someone else's view of what's on-trend. Still, if you're searching for what works and defining your personal style, I encourage you to branch out, try on, and see. You have nothing to lose. Finish it up with some classic black accessories and you're good to go.

How to Wear Skinny Jeans & When to Walk Away, Not to Mention PLUS The Top 10 Skinny Jean Picks on the Shopping List

Shhh, don't tell the retailers I told you this, especially since I've been working for one for the past decade, but skinny jeans aren't for everyone. They're just not. The skinny jean swept onto the scene as a trend a few seasons ago and yes, they've held on for awhile in several different iterations, most recently the color craze and now we're moving into textures and metallics, but they are a trend none the less, and what do trends do again? Right, say it with me, they come and they go.

But just because the world is screaming 'skinny jean,' doesn't mean you have to have a pair if A., they don't flatter your body and B., you feel ridiculous in them. Case in point: 1988 and Body Glove spandex. Those of you who just read and simultaneously cringed should fully grasp the concept of a trend gone terribly wrong. That reaction is your gut telling you to run, not walk, in the opposite direction. Trust that.

Fashion warning aside, for those of you who feel at-home in these skinny silhouettes and are in need of a little Fall wardrobe update (cue the Fall Essential Shopping Checklist), or are on the fence about adopting the skinny jean, this one is for you. Please note the distinction between thinking you're at-home in a trend and sheer style delusion. Always get a second opinion on trends. Always, and not necessarily from someone who is being paid to give it.

What you think works may or may not, and your true friends will tell you this. If they don't have the cojones to do so, by all means, shoot us a quick picture and we'll give you a thumbs up, thumbs down, and possible alternative.

It's an unbiased opinion from fashion insiders who have spent decades in the industry and know what works (aka myself and my editors). All trends are not universal, it's nothing personal and a trend, or not fitting into one, should never take away your sense of self. It's not you that doesn't fit the trend, it's the trend that doesn't fit your fabulous self. Re-read that last sentence if you have trouble taking compliments. You know who you are :)

Fashion should empower, not drain our energy, but sometimes we need a little direction. We've all been there and you'd be amazed at what you get just from asking a simple question. I continually am...

Now, on to the top 10 skinny jean picks out there to shop right now. Again, I always say, shop your own closet first. I do that for all of my clients as a starting point. But when you come up empty or in need of a refresher, it's time to get out there and shop around. A great way to browse and get your mind around it all is to hit the web. There's way too much out there, so the first baby step is taken for you with the edited down list of 10 picks. See below:

The 'what' in the age-old question, "what am I going to wear," is covered. But that's only half of it. You need to know how to wear it. It's essential. Everyday I look at my Inspiration Wall on Tumblr while I sip tea and get some laptop time in to wake myself up. I get instant inspiration on how to wear they clothing lining my closet walls, and life gets a little easier.

Here's a mini-version of my Inspiration Wall tailored to how to wear skinny jeans using shots of celebs, models, and mere mortals like you and I that get hit up on the Street Style blogs out there:

How to Wear Red Skinny Jeans Courtesy of Current/Elliott

How to Wear Red Skinny Jeans from Current/Elliott in 5 Steps

The pop color pant (or in this case, corduroy jean) is not going to be a thing of the past for at least another season, so hold on to what you've got or get in on a more Fall-centric version, i.e. the bold red corduroy jean from Current/Elliot. Never one to encourage shopping for the sake of accumulation, I highly recommend shopping your closet  for alternatives first, but if you're coming up short or black or beige even, it's time to buckle down and bring a new shade from the color spectrum into your closet by shopping Our Closet.

The foundation and inspiration behind it all is a pair of skinny corduroy jeans. The natural next step is figuring out how to wear them. Sounds simple, contrary to the daunting scenario of standing in-front of your closet at 8am with the phrase, 'I have nothing to wear,' rolling around in your head. No worries. That's why The StyleShaker is here. The work is done for you. Here's one transitional take on how to pull the look off below:

Shop the Look:

1. Equipment Brett Clean Blouse (  2. Current/Elliott The Skinny low-rise stretch-corduroy jeans (  3. Zara Basic Heel Court Shoe (  4. Belle Noel Gypsy Chic Hoop Earrings (  5. Yves Saint Laurent Reflective Stone Ring (

So, I'm looking at the shop-by-number montage and realizing how 'patriotic' these picks are, but it's more about proportions than color to start with. The skinny leg jean calls for some volume on top, and what better to bring that than a silk striped blouse from Equipment? In keeping the look somewhere right between Summer and Fall, the shoe stayed neutral and classic with a court pump from Zara.

Tying the loose ends together and polishing things off are a reflective stone statement ring from YSL and Belle Noel earrings that pack a lot of look into hoops. Done and done. Well, almost.

1. Equipment Brett Clean Blouse

2. Current/Elliott The Skinny low-rise stretch-corduroy jeans

3. Zara Basic Heel Court Shoe

4. Belle Noel Gypsy Chic Hoop Earrings

5.  Yves Saint Laurent Reflective Stone Ring

Quick recap: You know what to wear, how to wear it, where to shop, check, check, and check. Now it's time to think about what you're going to do in it, the best part. It's time to consider where those skinny red jeans will take you.

How about a Saturday lunch with old friends that turns into a marathon conversation and slides slowly,  right into dinner. No one notices the time though. Above you, a glass ceiling, below you, a table covered with half-full wine glasses, and surrounding you, the best part, friends you only see once or twice a year, but when you do, it's as if ten years never passed.

How to Wear Skinny Jeans? 7 Looks to Answer the Question

The Question: How to Wear Skinny Jeans? See 7 Ways to Wear the Trend

One of the top questions we get here is how to wear skinny jeans. Instead of serving up one or two takes on how to pull of this trend that can transition into fall, I've created seven looks so scroll through and get inspired!

This look is all about how to wear skinny jeans, in this case cropped, distressed skinny jeans, into Fall. There's still some color involved, and then a peep toe bootie to give things more of a cold weather feel:

HTW | What Should I Wear with Printed Skinny Jeans?

Q&A: What Should I Wear with Printed Skinny Jeans?

The latest fashion question we received came to us from Sara, in Destin, FL. Here it is: 'So I bought this amazing pair of printed skinny jeans and, outside of the basics, I'm at a loss. What should I wear with them? Help!"
Easy. All you need is a little inspiration and then some shopping mapped out online. See how it's done:

I was scanning through the August 2012 issue of Lucky Magazine when I stumbled upon the Lucky Guide to denim and fell in love with a couple of shots. First of all, there's this little printed denim moment that I'm all over. There's a lot of fashion going on here, and the look is definitely trend heavy, good for some, not so much for others. But the overall ensemble works in a mismatched way, and that's what I'm taking from it. Inspiration, found, check.

source: Lucky Magazine

The inspiration is there, now it's time to pull together a re-creation of the magazine ed shot using some of my own curated picks that just happen to be at lower price points than what you'll see in the mag, bonus. All except for the jeans, those I kept. Super easy to shop around and find, plus the print is original so I didn't want to mess with that part of the fashion equation.

Speaking of the skinny jeans, here they are. (*Shop more jeans here). The trick here is, you have to feel comfortable enough to wear them and not have them wear you. If you look at this print and cringe, then by all means, go for a light wash, solid-color jean, no worries. The important thing here is to push your style comfort level, but not to the point where you feel the opposite of confident walking out the door. That would defeat the entire purpose. So anyway, back to the jeans at hand...There's plenty of stretch, the print is on-point, and I happen to be a huge fan of Paige denim for comfort. You'll usually see me in my J.Brands, but when I branch out, Paige is always in the picture.

Now on to the blazer. (*Shop more blazers here). Rebecca Minkoff was a name known in the accessories world, with a handbag line that did incredibly well. Her following, the Minkettes, has taken the fashion industry by storm, and helped her brand grow, hence, the ready-to-wear line. This blazer is printed like the one from the mag, but in a less kamikaze way. The contrasting lapels bring it back into the realm of realistic and pulled together. I'm also in love with the length, a bit of a crop, that makes the blazer perfect for layering.

Speaking of layering, it's time for a basic tee, with a twist. (*Shop more of my favorite tops here). This one comes to The StyleShaker, courtesy of Theory. It takes the classic black tank and elevates the style quotient just a bit with some added volume and a collar that brings in some sophistication. This is the type of tank I buy once a season and wear with everything. The big word here is versatility.

And finally, I substituted some architectural sandals (*shop more of my favorite shoe picks here) for the bright green sandals the model is wearing in the Lucky Mag shot, just cause. I feel like it's more wearable and I mean really, when you have all the prints going on, you don't need them battling against one another for fashion face time. These shoes have plenty of detail to them and come off as semi-neutral in hue, so they're perfect to squeeze into day or evening, and bound to give you compliments. They're just that kind of sandal, original. The best part is, they tie together the look in an interesting, eclectic way, incorporating with the overall style theme seamlessly.

See more answers to those never-ending fashion questions that start as soon as you enter the closet in the morning and ask yourself, "what am I going to wear today?" I know I'm not alone in that little style song and dance, so get some answers, get inspired, and see more on what to wear, how to wear it, and where to shop.

How to Wear | Printed Pants (& Jeans)

Unless you've been living under a rock or have been attempting to run in the opposite direction from this trend, printed pants and jeans are here for Spring/Summer 2012, and let's just say, a little how-to-wear direction should be more than welcome. There's a fine line between uber-trends like this one. Sometimes the well-meaning, on-trend print, can take over the entire ensemble, let alone the woman wearing it. That said, I took a little blogger/tumblr inspiration and kept the rest of the look relatively neutral to allow the print (in this case paisley) to pop without going completely overboard.

Speaking of getting inspired, here's the look that started it off, a muscle tee that lets the print pop (source: :

And now it's time to take the inspiration and make it into a look, the magical shop by number moment that spells out how to wear it:

1. T By Alexander Wang Slub Muscle T-shirt (shop online:  2. Citizens of Humanity Avedon Paisley-Print Low-Rise Skinny Jeans (shop online:  3. Greta Patent Leather Bow Heels (shop online:  4. Kenneth Jay Lane Havana Link Necklace (shop online:  5. House of Harlow Long Arrow Ring in Rose Gold (shop online:  6. Ray-Ban RB2140 50 Sunglasses (shop online:

I love the easy t-shirt layered over the printed paisley Avedon skinny jeans from Citizens of Humanity. The masculine edge of those two pieces is softened up by the addition of some patent strappy sandals and a tortoise-link, KJL necklace. Finish it off with a House of Harlow ring that is about one click away from being an addition to my closet, and finally, some classic Ray Ban sunnies that scream summer, and you're all set.

If paisley isn't your thing, no worries, like I said, printed jeans and pants are a huge trend right now so there are options out there, to say the least. Here are just a few more that I've hand-picked to keep the shopping momentum going. Click away and get inspired:

Top 10 | My On-line Shopping List 6.22.12

Happy Friday to all of you. Welcome to today's round of Top 10 shopping picks that answer that pesky, yet lovable, what-to-wear question oh so well. And like all other Top 10 moments on the site, this one has that lucky number 11, the zen moment, that this time around features a quote by Arthur Ashe. Yep, I worked him into the fashion line up, unexpected but true.

We all have dreams and hopes, shopping has plenty to do with that. But the older I get (and I do so very gracefully thank you, or I attempt to) I hear more and more stories about what could have happened as opposed to what did. Dreams tend to get left on the cutting room floor for one reason or another. For myself, it's always been about knowing where to begin when it comes to executing 'impossible' dreams (that ps, later come to be known as very possible). A good list can give you a clear place to begin, like this Top 10, it's as easy as #1. Life however, could be a bit more complicated hence the addition of the last pick from Mr. Ashe. Hopefully he can simplify and shed some inspirational light on figuring out your own starting point.

It's just how we roll: impeccably curated shopping lists and answering life's tough questions. Scroll away:
