Style Tutorial #2 | How to Wear Maxi Skirts. 1 Ted Baker Skirt, 5 Ways to Wear It

Question: How to wear maxi skirts? Answer:
The maxi skirt can definitely be a polarizing piece when it comes to any woman's wardrobe. You either love it, or you have no clue what to do with it. But before I get to far ahead of myself, it's time for a proper introduction on the topic:

Personally, I love the way it can look when styled out appropriately, seems like an obvious statement, but it can go stylistically south in the blink of an eye. The key to a maxi is knowing how to pull it off and whether your body type is going to work well in this tricky silhouette. What else is new right? I know, but I'm about to tell you how to figure out which body type works best in which look so the work is pretty much done for you. Um, yay!
Just because something's a trend, doesn't mean you must have it, contrary to the content filling up fashion columns each month. If it works for you, fabulous, more maxi skirt power to you. If not, move along to what you feel good in and the pieces that work best for your body type (again, I'm here to help you figure that out.) See one gorgeous, super-spring like maxi skirt from Ted Baker and five options for how to wear it below. Then check out what body type each look belongs to. From there, it's full-on shopping and inspiration. Let's get the ball rolling with a quick video:

The 'How to Wear Maxi Skirts Video' is just one piece of the fashion puzzle. Next up, shop what you saw. But first, here's a close up of the looks from the video showing off five ways to wear this one color blocked maxi from Ted Baker:

To my Pear shaped ladies, the best looks for your body type are going to be Look 1 and Look 5. The layering will help even out the proportions on the top half of your body whether it's via the fitted leather motorcycle jacket or the chambray shirt (which I would leave untied at the hem and laying over the waist.
Rectangles: You can work out any of the above Looks (*note the below advice when it comes to height; this may be the only exception). Why? The maxi has small pleating details that will help define your waist back to any of the above top options.
Hourglass ladies, my people, the best looks for your body type are going to be Look 1, Look 3, and Look 5. There's a catch. If you go with Look 1 or Look 3, since the hourglass proportions can sometimes give a short-waisted look and feel, you will want to elongate your torso with the layers you use under the leather jacket and vest. Wear something, a tank or fitted tee, that falls just a bit below the jacket and vest but not all the way over your hips. This tricks the eye line and lengthens (visually) the mid-section. I do this all the time and it works wonders, but again, don't go too far with the under-pinning (top), the goal isn't to cover up, it's to elongate.
Finally, for the Apples of the bunch, your best bets are going to be Looks 1 and 5 as long as the shirt and jacket are fitted and not boxy. The idea of a layer on top to streamline a bit works only if that layer is not a bulky one. The last thing you'd want to do is add unnecessary volume so keep the top have a clean-cut and close to the body as possible. The pleats and length of the skirt will balance things out a bit.
**One caveat to this skirt is something I haven't mentioned and that is height. The less height you have, the less affinity you should have towards a maxi skirt or dress for that matter. It can be done, but is pulled off best when the skirt or dress in question cinches at  your narrowest spots (waist, etc). A pleated maxi skirt or maxi dress with extra volume is not your best friend. Instead, opt for a shorter summery dress with a wedge to add some height. Just a little style side note.

Maxi skirts are just one category of sooooo sooooo many. There's always more where that came from. Check out the pieces that are pulled each week while digging for my clients. They're all lined up, all of the favorite picks from my favorite shopping spots on-line, in the StyleShaker Closet.

Style Tutorial #1 | How to Wear Tank Tops. 1 Rebecca Taylor Tank, 5 Ways to Wear It

Style Tutorial #1 comes into focus and shows you how to wear tank tops. In this case, it's all about a printed, floaty tank top (courtesy of Rebecca Taylor) just in time for rising temps. One tank, five ways to wear it, and that's just me warming up...
I decided to bring in a little Style 101 to the StyleShaker via some inspired videos that are short, sweet, to the point, and remarkably reminiscent of Cher's closet computer from the movie 'Clueless.' Seen it? Know the one I'm talking about? Have you been dying to figure out how to do that for yourself since the late nineties like I have?
Ok fine, maybe I'm alone in my obsession, but it was worth every minute of analysis when it came to figuring out how to replicate it.
Here's my version, an approach on how to (and a couple of how-not-to moments) wear one pick, in this case, a Rebecca Taylor tank that's at the top of the summer shopping list. Click play and see pieces slide in and out of the picture so you can literally watch how many looks can come from this one, incredibly versatile tank.
It's about optimizing your closet, a concept that is the foundation of my approach with every one of my clients (get the details on what I do here) I have that comes to me asking for some inspiration on new ways to wear what they have hanging in their closet. This is also about bringing it back down to earth. These looks are polished and fashion-forward, but above all, they are wearable and approachable for real women out there. That's the goal, SO, enough of me going on and on, check out the video and keep scrolling because there's plenty more to go thru here, read: see how each works for your body type.

Here's the big picture when it comes to how to wear tank tops, a summer essential. One tank, five ways to wear it, and go:

look 1: This look works well for every body type, there are just a few tweaks to make in each when it comes to accessories. For the Pears out there, this is a GREAT look. Keep the heel height up there and avoid any shoes that cut you off at the ankles (i.e. thick strap gladiator sandals, etc). Rectangles, you're good to go. Hourglasses, if you're fuller on top, a great way to streamline would be to incorporate a streamlined blazer (black, maybe a few sequins for evening to pop the look, or just keep it clean) as a layer over the tank to reel it in and not throw proportions out of whack. Same with our Apple ladies out there.
look 2: This is a universally flattering look. The proportion of the floaty tank back to a clean, polished trouser with a slight flare at the hem is a killer combo. Apples & Pears: Here's a good time to layer on a cardigan if you want to add some coverage or elongate a bit, just make sure it falls to the hip, is tight around the arm, and drapes across the bust easily (nothing too stiff).
look 3: This look you will either love or not be able to look at due to the shorts factor. If you're an Hourglass or Apple, be careful with this one. You don't want to accentuate too much volume on top so you could always substitute something a bit more curve-hugging on top, or even just a chambray button-front shirt to add a bit more structure to the look. Hourglass, Pear, and Rectangle, you're all good to go here. If you're completely shorts-averse, throw in a pair of white skinny jeans and head on your way!
look 4: This is almost universally flattering. Almost. Apples and possibly larger busted Hourglass ladies, bring in another layer, blazer, cardi, something fitted to cinch things in a bit and add structure, OR substitute a tank that is still flowy but with an empire waist or cinching incorporated into it to keep the proportions looking how you want them to. The rest of the silhouettes can have at it. Flats are ok, but not ideal with the higher volume on top and skinny leg.
look 5: Finally, the same goes for this look although, the straight-leg, or really, slightly flared jean, makes things so easy for every shape. This is going to add shape to the Rectangles out there, keep things proportioned for the Pears and Hourglasses, and actually do the same for the Apples.

There's always more where that came from. Check out the pieces that are pulled each week while digging for my clients. They're all lined up, all of the favorite picks from my favorite shopping spots on-line, in the StyleShaker Closet.

Shopping List Video | 5 Flat Sandals to Jump On for Summer, Get Inspired

I'm not going to sugarcoat the fact that I hardly ever wear flats. I'm a heels girl. My spectrum of flats has been known to range from beat-up flip flops all the way to a worn-out pair of argyle ballet flats. Time flies when you're running a business, focusing on fine-tuning everyone else's closet while neglecting the glaring signs that you're in desperate need an update yourself.

It's a perk of the job actually. As I shop for my clients and create Virtual Lookbooks, my eyes screen hundreds of products on any given day. This week it all came together. The latest Virtual Lookbook featured a few favorite flat sandals that are perfect for both my client and myself. Check out the top 5 of the bunch:

Cross it Off the Spring Shopping List | 7 Flat Sandals to Shop

Fine, ok, I'll admit it. It's time to come clean. I've been telling more than I've been showing...Ughhhh.

Have you ever run into a matchmaker that can never find the time to date? Or the holistic nutritionist that has an empty fridge and a freezer stocked with one Lean Cuisine ? Right, well I'm the personal shopper that never shops for herself. Hi, nice to meet you.

I'm always speaking with my clients about the importance of building the strong foundation of a Core Closet filled with edited 'essentials' and a couple of key, on-trend pieces for a quick updateDo I take my own advice? Well, the stylish 'bones' of the wardrobe are here and there, but I need some help. My Core Closet for Spring is only a third of the way there. I have my investment pieces, but there are essentials for Spring that I have still yet to pick up. I mean, we're almost in April. Shame on me.

The good news? I know exactly what to do  to solve the style problem. It's time to show rather than tell you what I do. This is also where the StyleShaker began so I've come full circle. See the story here. The other good news? I've got a trip to Tortola lighting a fire under my, well you know what, coming up at the end of April. Motivation, the best kind.

Here's the working Shopping List, i.e. everything I need for Spring (with a few additions for the trip; the list is a living, breathing thing so flexibility is always an option, after all, it's written in Photoshop, not stone).

Next, I'll go line by line, shop for the best picks that fit my preferences, and start pulling the entire picture together, piece by piece. Each pick I shop I'll document here so you can shop along and get inspired. Speaking of inspiration, with every post I'll include ways to wear the new pick (there's no point in having it if you don't know how to wear it, otherwise known at the mission statement behind my Virtual Lookbooks) and a little feel-good inspiration to top it off. For now, the list. First up, I'm in desperate need of some flat sandals that aren't flip-flops for Tortola to wear with my maxi and beach dresses...
