Get My Look | What I Wear When I Want to Smile Like I Mean It

Setting the intention: With everything I do on this site, my intention is simply to inspire you. It always has been and it always will be. Should you crack a smile on top of this, then my day is made. On to the Get My Look post..

Quick question: who doesn't have those days when you wish someone else would do the talking for you? You know the ones, when even bathing your brain in copious amounts of caffeine doesn't bring you to the point of wanting to speak like a grown up because you're not sure you can take one more second of the Monday business review meeting, the fifty-two page (um, why people, why?) powerpoint deck, or the same guy who walks into the elevator every Wednesday and says, "well, at least it's hump day right?"

If you can't relate, good for you. In my past life however, there were those days when speaking to another human being in a cordial manner (let alone coherently) seemed impossible (this is huge coming from an individual who could hold a steady conversation with a brick wall for hours).

It was on one of those exact days recently that a good friend told me to, "smile like you mean it, until you mean it." Um, ok? So, I took my friends advice and walked around at an early 8am meeting with a blatant (almost comical and slightly obnoxious even though that wasn't what I was going for)  smile on my face, much to the wonderment of my pre-first-coffee-of-the-day retail peers attending the same planning meeting.

Five minutes in, I actually started to feel on the inside like I looked on the outside. On top of that was the added bonus of watching others in the conference room smile with me. Whether it was because they questioned my sanity, thought I looked ridiculous, felt sorry for me being all alone in Smiley La-La Land, or were genetically predisposed to respond by mimicking my facial expression I don't know, and honestly I don't care. The room went from lifeless to happy in five minutes. Could what started as a fake smile really have been the catalyst to this shift?

After a bit of digging, I found out that smiling sends a trigger to your brain that literally changes your mood. Sure, when we're sad, we frown. But what if we can also bring on sadness because we frown? The same question applies to any expression, in this case, smiling.

It's an outside-in approach that fascinates me as a stylist. I do my work on the outside for the client which is all fine and good. But then I get to witness something below surface level. I see an instant impact on a client's mood (let alone a change in the way they look at themselves in the mirror; read: they work their look out) when I get them into a look that has them feeling surprisingly (for them, I saw it all along) confident.

Clients are one thing. When I need to inspire myself but don't have my friend around for support, I turn to what I'm wearing to start the chain reaction. My smile soon becomes an accessory.

Today's Get My Look moment involves a pair of to-die-for, crazy insanely printed, Kenzo pants. Every time I look down at a print that isn't for the fashionably timid (understatement), not only will I get a dose of color therapy, I'll start to smile. Here's the fashion-induced chain reaction for further explanation and your viewing pleasure (cue my own form of fashion science):

Pants > smile > triggers Brittany's brain > mood lifts > big ole' smile > smiling is contagious so everyone walking past me smiles back not really knowing why > onlookers' moods are elevated > those walking past previous onlookers smile, again, not knowing why but hey, why not? > and the domino effect continues...

Get it? All from a pair of printed Kenzo pants. Do  you love it? Are you smiling? You should and then go out and show the world so you can pass it along.

Body type. Right. It's one thing to know what looks amazing in a shop-by-number montage, but does it work for your personal body type? That's the million dollar question. See below:

body type img

Rectangles, hourglasses (keep the heel, it's a must), you're all set. Apples, you can do it if you also keep a high heel in there to elongate. Pears, this is not for you as I'm sure you could imagine. Drawing the eye to the widest part of your fabulous silhouette is not the best style scenario (for you, or any other body type out there). Go with a fuller leg pant in a solid color to keep the fashion momentum going. Maybe even a washed, boot-cut jean in a warmer hue like peach or burgundy.

Get My Look | What I Wear When I Can't Make Up My Mind

Three words, 8 steps: Get, my, look.

Matchy-matchy can be predictable-predictable.  We are all guilty of going back to that 20% of our closets that we keep on heavy rotation because, well, it's easy. I get it. But what about the rest of what's hanging in there, that 80% you look at every day and wonder, "should I finally wear this, wait, how should I wear this, wait, why did I buy this?"

To my personal shopping and styling clients reading this, sound familiar? Right. Well, technically speaking, it shouldn't be all that familiar any more. It should be a distant memory...

When I'm working with a client or speaking to a group of women at one of my Sip & Style Sessions, I find that things really start to click as soon as I begin pairing pieces they have with ideas they would have never dreamt of. Now, are these combination novel? Mind-blowing? Absolutely not. Actually, I love the fact that they are incredibly simple, approachable, affordable, and at the end of the day, real fashion for real women. It just takes a little inspiration and some helpful direction. Hence today's Get My Look post.

See how I pull things off when I'm feeling creative and want to go in a direction that's the exact opposite of matchy-matchy (translation: you will NOT find any color coordinated twin-sets in this one). If it strikes a chord in you, try it out using pieces from your own closet and mix and match away. If you have questions, it's really simple, just ask. For now, soak up the look-spiration:

Pop quiz: What good is a look if you don't know how to wear it for your body type? It gets the inspiration flowing, yes, that's a bad thing. But loving a look and shopping according to a Style by Number situation above while not considering what works best for you silhouette can also leave you with a full closet and nothing to wear. Frustration, peace out. You're no longer welcome here. See which body types this look works for and where you may want to consider making a few fashion tweaks or moving on to the next look all together:

body type img

Rectangles and Hourglasses, this is all you. Apples, the reason you're not on this list is because there's too much volume on the top with the jacket. Swap that leather classic out for a more fitted cardigan (grey possibly, any neutral will do just not black) and you're all set. Pears, the pleats are why I left you out of this initial equation. Should you find a skirt sans pleats that is about midi-length (mid-calf) then feel free to partake!

Clothing, what you wear on the outside, truly can make you feel good walking throughout your day. I not only believe this, I live it every day in my own life and I see it in each and every one of my clients. That's the outside though and it can only take you so far. It's important, but it's one piece of the puzzle. Now it's time to try something on, this time, on the inside. Check out the quote, see if it resonates, and hopefully it inspires you the way it did me. Inspiration, inside AND out.

Zen moment, and today it's short and simple...

Such a great line, so much so that I think it should be said daily. So here's your little exercise for the day, your mission should you choose to accept it: when you read that line and one person pops into your head (or two, or three, or four, etc..) tell them. Tell them you love them to the moon and back, just because.

It's SO much better than a gift on their birthday or holiday. This is the unexpected 'trinket' gift, the best gift of all in my opinion. It's not obligatory, it's not planned, it just lets the ones you love know how much you appreciate them, just because they are who they are.

So, there it is, take it or leave it. I would suggest taking it and running with it though. I'm going to...

Just sayin.

How to Wear Skinny Jeans? 7 Looks to Answer the Question

The Question: How to Wear Skinny Jeans? See 7 Ways to Wear the Trend

One of the top questions we get here is how to wear skinny jeans. Instead of serving up one or two takes on how to pull of this trend that can transition into fall, I've created seven looks so scroll through and get inspired!

1.

This look is all about how to wear skinny jeans, in this case cropped, distressed skinny jeans, into Fall. There's still some color involved, and then a peep toe bootie to give things more of a cold weather feel:

2.

Again, another take on how to wear the same Siwy skinnies with a Fall twist. You will always see me swooning over a Burberry trench. And the rest of this look is just simple and easy with a little edge:

3.

I love the preppy feel on this look. The chambray shirt is an essential to any closet for any season. The leopard print adds some personality along with the bold coral leather tote from Gap:

4.

One more take on how to wear skinny jeans involves a silk top I'm obsessed with. The volume on top balances out the streamlined denim. The fedora and other accessories pull it all together:

5.

Here's a weekend look for the skinny jean question. It's all about keeping it simple, stylish, and showing some personality in subtle red pops through the accessories:

How to Wear | Stripes, Inspired By 10 Crosby Derek Lam

A Spring 2012, 10 Crosby Derek Lam runway shot was the inspiration behind this how-to-wear it, runway re-creation moment. I bought a striped, three quarter length tee at H&M in Paris of all places, in January, and ended up with a case of buyer's remorse. Obviously price wasn't the issue, it was H&M so we're not talking expensive. But I was so let down by the fact that this shirt both faded and fit poorly after one wash. I know better than to expect couture, but I wasn't expecting disposable. Sad face.

My sad little H&M was sandwiched between a tour of Notre Dame and one of the best midday wine breaks I have ever experienced in my life, so it didn't really put a damper on things for too long. That said, I've been on the hunt for some stripes ever since, and although other shopping list items have stolen my focus recently (there's the pop color pencil skirt I'm dying for, the denim button front shirt, etc.), running across this 10 Crosby Derek Lam look was a quick reminder that, yep, I'm still in desperate need of some stripes for summer cause it's kind of already arrived, the season that is. Well maybe, not for much longer...

See the inspiration look here:

(via www.style.com)

And now it's time for me to re-create the look with my own spin on things. Check out the shop-by-number and see how to wear some stripes here:

1. Louche Blazer by SMYTHE (shop online: www.singer22.com)  2. Polly Popover (shop online: www.jcrew.com)  3. Derek Lam Trousers with Black Laminate Stripes (shop online: www.shopbop.com)  4. Mulberry Bayswater Croco-Embossed Tote (shop online: www.mytheresa.com)  5. Kenneth Jay Lane Stone Station Necklace (shop online: www.shopbop.com)  6. MICHAEL Michael Kors Seville Platform (shop online: www.zappos.com)

It all comes together and stays with the contrasting strip theme from the runway shot, just a few less stripes on my re-creation. No more sad face after these finds thank you very much. I'll be clicking around on J.Crew's site and have a button front, striped shirt in my hands in less than three to five business days. Sure, the delivery on this go 'round won't arrive between a visit to a historical landmark and some of the best wine I have ever gulped down, but I think I can make do and figure something else out. It will be a reason to celebrate after all, so I'll pull something together and make it work. I always do.

See more looks that have inspired me along the way and also how to wear them.

How to Wear | A Summer Sweater

How to wear a summer sweater, right. Well, I suppose I'll begin with this...There's a side of me that has always wanted to be the west coast, beach happy, sufer-chick. And by, 'chick,' I'm of course referencing an independent woman who frolics in the Cali sun all day with a smile on her face and a tan that only comes from days spent walking beaches. Just easy, peaceful, grounded and having major life questions that run the gammut from:

1. when the next wave will come in, to 2., what time I should plan on being back from the farmers market to start on a gorgeously divine organic dinner that can only be eaten in the company of good friends, bottles of good wine, love, laughter, and of course, I gotta have my fire pit.

This is just one side of this East Coaster's ever-growing montage of 'big-life' dreams. There are many sides, but for now, I'll stick with the So-Cal inspiration and pull together a look that makes me think of what I'd wear along the way.

See how to wear one of the holiest (think less Bible holy, and more swiss cheese hole-y) summer sweaters I've seen yet? Question answered, but first, check out the inspiration for this look:

Image via www.thestyleshaker.tumblr.com

Now it's time to get to the best part. The part that satisfies the control-freak in me, and that is the shop-by-number montage that I'm in love with because it's the closest thing to a list I have been able to pull off on here. What is it about a good list right? And marking off lines on said list? It's like mainlining happy juice. It's cool, I've been like this my entire life, I'm good with it. Moving right along...

1. BCBGMAXAZRIA 'Melia' Open Knit Dolman Sleeve Sweater (shop online: www.nordstrom.com) 2. Alexander Wang Mini Skirt (shop online: www.yoox.com)  3. IRO Ellen ribbed silk tank (shop online: www.theoutnet.com)  4. Heather Benjamin "Sea" Blue Mexican Turquoise Ring (shop online: www.endless.com)  5.  Jerome Dreyfuss Johan Bag (shop online: www.dianiboutique.com) 6. ASOS FLIGHT Leather Beaded Flat Sandals (shop online: www.asos.com)

Obviously this starts off with the focal point of the 'how to wear,' ensemble, and that is the sweater from BCBGMAXAZRIA. The holes present an opportunity to layer, and by all means, unless you want to give 'em a show, I'd highly recommend pairing the sweater with a tank like the one above from Alexander Wang.
Cut to the mini skirt, and 3.1 Phillip Lim is to the rescue, yet again. It's not a 'dumb' (aka basic) mini that you could find anywhere. I'm not saying a basic wouldn't work well here, it would, but it's all about the details and taking it from a potential of white denim to this cream, pocketed skirt with seaming detail, brings the entire look to a new level that leans a bit further into the chic end of the fashion pool.
Finally, some color already! The ring, it's like having a piece of the Pacific floating on your finger. It's a must-have and can cover day to evening when it comes to looks. The bag. I die for the bag, and yes, I'm paraphrasing the greatness that is Rachel Zoe because I've watched each season and loved every minute. It rubs off, and I couldn't be happier about that. Jerome Dreyfuss has some of the most unbelievable leathers out there. This I learned after petting one too many leather bags from my time spent in the buying offices on the seventh floor of one of the country's most recognized luxury retailers. This was also know as my second home at the time since I hardly ever saw the light of day. Fun times, crazy times, happy to have moved on. Not name dropping though. It's not how I roll.
But I can tell you that the bag is going to feel like, 'buttah.' Not butter, I said, 'buttah.' Make sure you get it treated so you can guard against stains, water, and all the other scary natural elements out there.
Now that we have the pop of soft blue back to the greys and creams going on  here, it's time to tie it in with e neutral-ish sandal. It's a fun take on the normal thong sandal but doesn't go overboard with color or detail, allowing the rest of the look to do what it does so well, just that.
So there you have it. How to wear a summer sweater with more holes than my new perforated Pour la Victoire satchel. I'll keep my west coast dreams alive with this one, and hopefully inspire some other dreams out there.
See more of my fashion favorites, top trends, and what to wear, plus the bonus round, how to wear them. One without the other is just incomplete when it comes to personal style and fashion.
