The Hourglass Body Type can handle almost anything you throw at it. This sweater works IF the fit is slightly snug, not body-conscious, but shows a bit of shape, i.e. the fabric shouldn't fall too far away from your body or else you cover up all the assets you have going for you. The v-neck flatters and it's a great way to throw in color to an otherwise basic look.

BOTTOM_whyitworksheader(1)

The boot-cut jean fits along the thigh, hugs your curves, and with a slight flare at the hem, adds a little more dimension to keep your naturally balanced proportions, well, balanced. It also allows you to pull off a flat without going to narrow along the leg line if it were a skinny jean.

REST_whyitworksheader(1)

The flat is throw into the mix to show you how to take a basic look and make it your own using print. Color can also be used. Keep the jewelry simple, you can go silver or gold (shown above), and bracelets or necklaces are not out of the option. A bold statement necklace (color or metallic) on it's own would also be something that will take the look and dress it up a bit instantly. The neutral bag speaks for itself as it's an essential every woman needs to lug around her life's contents in throughout the day.

Online Shopping Review | J.Crew’s Featherweight Cotton V-neck Cardigan

Online shopping review anyone? Why yes, thank you, I'd love to share the latest. Mmmm hmm.

J.Crew has certainly seen a lot of action from me lately. First I went coo-coo for coco puffs on their swimwear (see the online shopping reviews here) and now I've gone into the ready-to-wear section with a classic that we all know and love, the cardigan. This time around, I'm talking about the featherweight, v-neck version of said Closet Classic/Essential.

So, did the cardi find a home in my closet or did I send it packing, not with me on my recent trip, but back to the warehouse it came from? First things first...

Here's the product shot from J.Crew.com (doctored up via Photoshop because I can't help myself):

redcardiprodtshot

product shot courtesy of www.jcrew.com

That's what I shopped online. Here's what showed up at my front door. Images courtesy of Instagram, etc. Click here to follow along.

Another shot of the tomato red J. Crew cardi on today's product review chopping block. Remarkably similar to the product shot I saw online, which is a very very good thing. Consistency in the online shopping arena is key as you well know (i.e. you saw a pink dress online, bought it, and it's periwinkle blue twin arrived at your house instead). Time to check out my camera skills:

myprodshotredcardi

Here's the scorecard:

ranking red cardi

Overall, this cardi came with me to Tortola and has made several cameos since then. I'm in love with pretty much everything about it from the color to the light weight cotton that works as temps begin to rise (along with the humidity) rapidly.

I hardly ever, EVER, give out five stars. The last pick that got five stars was a Burberry blazer that I consider to be a member of my family. As in, it's going into my will. And yes, I'm that insane about it.

That said, the higher the price of an item doesn't always equate to a higher ranking. I have a pair of Boutique 9 suede gladiator sandals that hit right at $150 in the coveted five star spot as well.

What I do want you to know is that my online shopping reviews are 100% unbiased. I hold product to a high level of expectation, and I shop everywhere. A decade at Neiman Marcus may have ruined me when it comes to knowing how ridiculously well designer construction fits (thanks Mr. Armani, I've now seen how good it can be and it's tough to go back, so I suppose I should also thank Mr., um, Sample Sale?), but I know value when I see it, and also when I don't.

A big label, and subsequent price tag, is never a guarantee. I shop Target, I shop La Garconne, I hit up J.Crew and I'll never shy away from a quick trip to Yoox.com. My standards are high regardless of  location. Just ask my clients. Well, you can't because their information is on full lock-down. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Moving along...

As far as body type consideration goes, this cardigan is universal. It's an all-skate for pretty much any silhouette out there. The v-neck elongates, the fit is close enough to the body but not too snug (very comfy), and the length is right where you want it to be (just below the waistline or right on it). The only way you could mess this up would be to pair it back to a hunter green, a big red spongey nose, and go around singing Xmas jingles in July. An unlikely, or so I'd like to think.

body type img

My only 'iffy' moment when trying on this cardigan was sleeve length. Part of me really wished the sleeves had gone all the way down to my wrists, it's an odd-security blanket thing I'm guessing I developed after moving and being the new kid (for the ump-teenth time) at a middle school in New Canaan, Connecticut.

I love having the option of pushing up sleeves or leaving them long. This cardigan misses the mark there, but it's stated in the product details so really, shame on me for not reading all of those bullet points. Still, the length isn't three-quarter, or half-sleeve, it's just odd. But not a deal-breaker. The color by the way, I die for. Amazing.

Overall. Love it. J.Crew scores yet again. This cardigan has officially found a new home in my closet.

Online Shopping List | 20 New Arrival Finds that Just Hit my Favorite Sites

Good 'online shopping list' morning StyleShakers.

I'm always scouring away to find the new pieces that are hitting the virtual 'shelves' of my favorite online shopping spots on the web. It's a weekly/daily occurrence because, a. I love to check out what's new, and b., I tend to get plenty of questions from my personal styling/shopping clients as well as during my Sip & Style Sessions regarding where women can find specific pieces they're looking for in their wardrobe. Now, I'm sharing my finds with you.

This is what I consider 'research' (yet another reason I love this job) so take a minute, scroll through, and click to check out my latest finds from my top shopping spots. This round, I focused on: FreePeople.com, TheOutnet.com, Shopbop.com, and UrbanOutfitters.com.

Shop-on, and if you see something you need help with deciding on ('How could I wear this? is this top appropriate for my age?' or, 'Is this dress good for my body type?' or, 'Am I have a crazy moment for thinking these pants will be a good look for me?') ask a question. Its's that simple. These are the questions I've built my business on, and it's part of my life's mission to help women answer them but more importantly, feel good about what they buy so they can feel good wearing it when they're out and about, you know, running the world and all.

Was this just a 'warm up' for you? Keep the momentum going strong and check out the motherload of all shopping on The StyleShaker. It's what I call, The Closet, my happy place filled and updated weekly with new finds used for How to Wear Tutorials, Product Reviews, Personal Client Shopping Lists, and then some. Today's Pick, Jason Wu's Striped Sweater & How to Wear It

I love it when the two worlds of What to Wear & How to Wear It come together, especially in one little fashion post. Today's inspiration comes courtesy of Jason Wu and one super-impressive striped sweater. See what I'm talking about below. Here's what to wear:

Jason Wu Striped Crochet-Knit Cotton-Blend Sweater

And now it's on to how to wear it:

the look montage

source:  Jason Wu Striped Crochet-Knit Cotton-Blend Sweater (www.net-a-porter.com), Mother Denim High Waist Skinny Jean (www.farfetch.com), See By Chloe Cuffed High Heel Sandals (www.shopbop.com), Deux Lux Empire Strikes Back Convertible Backpack (www.boutiquetoyou.com), Judy Geib Gold Large Squash Hoop Earrings (www.barneys.com), Hervé Van Der Straeten 24-Karat Gold-Plated Cuff (www.net-a-porter.com)

Like I mentioned earlier, it isn't just about what to wear, it's all about how to wear it. Do you wear about an eighth of what's actually hanging in your closet, a. because you don't know what you have back there, b. because you don't know how to wear what you do have, or c. because you don't have the time or brain power at six in the morning to figure it out (I guess I should put a d. all of the above)? You're not alone.

Never ask, 'what am I going to wear?' again by getting on the list my clients have already discovered, the What to Wear Weekly Lookbook list. Check it all out, and see what you get for under $20, or just click away to get some Lookbook inspiration:

Today's Shopping List | From Feathered Booties to Cat Eye Sunnies, The Gang's All Here

I just realized I haven't had any sunglasses up and running on the StyleShaker shopping lists as of late, and for no good reason. For shame.

I will say however, that Tom Ford's Bardot Cat Eye sunglasses make up for any accessory deficit there was. Follow those sunnies up with a feathered ankle boot, the perfect jumper from Wildfox Couture, and a leather jacket to put all other leather jackets to shame from none other than Mackage, and today it shaping up to be a very good day...

And if there ever was a time to get some quotable inspiration, now would be it right? Right. Cue a little enlightenment from the complex mind of Edgar Allen Poe:

quotes

Why save all of your dreams for when you're eyes are closed? Seriously, when you walk down the street (or through the halls of the office building, etc) with open eyes, truth really can be stranger than fiction.

It may just be me, but when I get down to some creative writing time (which is never enough in my everyday life), I've penned some pretty interesting stories of characters based (not even close to loosely) on the people I've worked with over the years. These day dreaming moments were my sanctuary in the middle of board meetings that would include forty page decks punctuated by hundreds of bullet points each explained by one monotonous voice or another.

My imagination saved me on those days. Without it, I'd probably have turned cubicle-beige on the inside, and that's just not right.

Make it a game. Try to find something extraordinary in the ordinary today. It's easier than you think.

Zen moment time people. It's Monday, the frenzy has begun, which means it's the perfect time for a little breather in the middle of the 'reality' of it all. It's time to take a quick minute, slow your roll, and soak up a little inspiration, this time brought to you courtesy of a quote from D.H. Lawrence:

quotes

D. H. serves up one more way to spin the concept of trusting someone's actions more than their words, and, I, LOVE, it. I love it because it's the great equalizer.

When things get confusing, and you don't know what to believe, first and foremost, take a minute to get a bit more in-tune with yourself. I'll always advocate some quiet time, but when that gets you nowhere, or worse, the mere thought of being your own company has you breaking out in hives (note: this should be explored  further, maybe in a therapy session), there's always the ever-reliable quick reference on the actions of the person in question (sig other, friend, fam member, what have you) to help clarify things a bit.

When people show you who they are, listen. Look at their tale as you hear them out. Your gut will sort it out from there. And yes, it can be that simple. I've found most things can be if we would just get out of our own way, give ourselves a little break, and above all, trust our instincts. Easier said than done, but that's why I'm here. It all starts with a little inspiration, be it a colorful cardigan or classic quote.

Split Screen | 1 J. Crew Bateau Neck Sweater, 2 Ways to Wear It

The split screen is a simple, style equation: 1 J.Crew Bateau neck sweater, 2 ways to wear it. Easy, peasy.

I had to hold myself back on this one, go figure, the editor is editing. I could easily work this classic sweater, with it's ridiculously (universally) flattering neckline and sophisticated silhouette, into countless looks. It's all about seeing the potential in one piece and making it work for you, or go the extra fashion mile if you will. You just need a little inspiration to warm things up and start to see four looks where you only saw one before all this.

For now, I'm keeping it short and sweet with two looks that range from wear-to-work, to something a bit more casual for day. Let's get started:

look1_header

Like I said, one sweater, two ways to wear it. First up, look number one, a simple daytime combo that keeps a clean foundation giving the pink-drenched 3.1 Phillip Lim satchel all of the focus, as if anything within a three foot radius could steal it's thunder. Pop of pink aside, the best part about this ensemble is that it can go from day to evening with a simple shoe swap. Throw the quilted leather flats into the satchel, slip on some heels, and you're ready for cocktails.

Campbell Knuckle Floating Ring (www.shopbop.com), 4. 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Satchel (www.barneys.com

look2_header

Super-chic & perfectly polished. Round two on ways to wear this sweater falls in fashion line with a classic work look. Ok fine, this is what I would call a work look having spent the last decade in the fashion industry. So sure, for some this may seem slightly warped, but believe me, if you're looking at this and thinking, "oh my god I love this, but there's no way I could pull that off, whoa, those heels are ridiculous," think again (oh, and trust me, you can find a lower pump out there, start here). There's no reason why you can't bend outside of your personal style comfort zone and have a little fun amidst the craziness of your day, actually I encourage it. After all, the Split Screen is all about playing with your clothes and getting inspired.

One Creatures from the Wind for J.Crew Sweater Tee, Four Ways to Wear It: Look 2

I Love a Good Ways-to-Wear it Moment. It All Begins with a J.Crew Sweater Tee. See Where the Look Takes You...

Allow me to introduce to you, the J.Crew sweater tee that inspired it all:

source: www.jcrew.com

The goal is to take one sweater and create four, go-to looks for all types of occasions. Here is look 2, just one more take on how to wear it:

The layering makes this the perfect look to take into Fall and winter (maybe add in a scarf, gloves, etc as the temps drop). A flare leg trouser, especially the 'Hutton' from Rachel Zoe, is extremely flattering and lengthens almost any leg line. The rest of the equation comes together with some core closet pieces and a final pop of color from a platform pump.

What to Wear to Work, Something New & Different. It's About Time...

Time for a New Take on What to Wear to Work. Here Come 4 New Looks to Inspire Your Work Wardrobe...

So, the million dollar question is:

source: www.roseborn.com

We all get into style ruts when it comes to what to wear to work. I'm definitely guilty of reaching for my black skinny pants one too many times. Sometimes it just takes a little nudge to get the fashion juices flowing again. Cue the below four looks, served up 'shop-by-number' style for a little wardrobe inspiration.

Look 1: The Pencil Skirt, an absolute must-have. Pair it with a cozy striped knit, subtle nude pumps to elongate the leg line, and your everyday satchel. Polish it off with a pair of smokey drop earrings:

1. Thakoon Addition Striped Knitted Sweater (www.net-a-porter.com) 2. Reiss Simia Pencil Skirt (www.reiss.com) 3. L.A.M.B. Meredith Platform Pump (www.amazon.com) 4. Coach Legacy Leather Rory Satchel (www.coach.com) 5. Brace Yourself LA Chunky Stone Earrings (www.maxandchloe.com)

Look 2: Everyone has the quintessential black blazer. A cobalt blue blazer with a peplum on the other hand, is the perfect pop piece to liven things up a bit. Let the blazer do the talking. Pair basic black pumps with a flared, fitted trouser, and add some subtle color with accents from earrings to a rich, rust-colored, leather messenger bag:

1. Ted Baker Wrenn Peplum Jacket (www.houseoffraser.co.uk) 2. Burberry Prorsum Stretch Trousers (www.matchesfashion.com) 3. Mango Suede Stiletto Pump (www.shop.mango.com) 4. Aldo Eskeets Messenger Bag (www.aldoshoes.com) 5. Oscar de la Renta Waterfall Stone Earring (www.oscardelarenta.com) 6. Charlene K Gold Dipped Ring (www.maxandchloe.com)

Look 3: This one is not for the fashionably timid. The red wide-leg pant can actually be extremely versatile, don't let the bold color frighten you. Actually, every piece in this look can seamlessly find it's way into a myriad of other ensembles. Thrown all together though, you get an updated take on the silk blouse/trouser combo.

1. PJK Patterson J. Kincaid Blouse Farrow Button (www.bloomingdales.com) 2.Reiss Daria Wide Leg Trousers (www.reiss.com) 3. Dune Bernie Leopard Pointed Court Shoes (www.us.asos.com) 4. Vince Camuto Natalie Round Satchel (www.vincecamuto.com) 5. Alex and Ani Spiritual Armor "Plume" Russian-Gold Bangle Bracelet (www.endless.com) 6. Yves Saint Laurent Statement Ring (www.mytheresa.com)

Look 4: Throw a blazer over a dress and you have your daytime look covered. Subtract the jacket from the fashion equation and you're instantly in cocktail-mode. The look isn't only streamlined and polished, it's actually one of the most comfortable combinations out there. Don't forget the cap-toe on your everyday black pump. How to Wear Over the Knee Boots, Inspired by Altuzarra

How to Wear Over the Knee Boots without Letting Them Wear You

It's amazing what a little, well in this case, not-so-little accessory can do. This time around it's all about how to wear over-the-knee boots, and the inspiration comes directly from Altuzarra's Fall runway. First of all, I'm drooling over the jacket, but this is nothing new as my major fashion fixation happens to be in that category. I would have gone down the outwear path, but instead, I'm focusing on the boot, and really, let's be honest, how could I not with this look.

The layers have me crossing my fingers and toes that Fall will somehow hit early in Dallas this year. Realistically that is not going to happen, but a girl can dream, and what better to help me visualize than a fabulously fall-friendly, layered look from my favorite, Altuzarra right? So let's get moving on how to wear the over the knee boot using the runway as inspiration. Time to re-create the look in four simple steps.

source: www.style.com

Here's how to pull it off:

1. Altuzarra Fur Collar Coat (www.barneys.com) 2. Lela Rose Cowl-neck marled-knit sweater (www.theoutnet.com) 3. Stella McCartney Cargo Pants (www.bergdorfgoodman.com) 4. Alberta Ferretti Over-the-knee boots (www.theoutnet.com)

I dug, I hunted, and I buried my face into the computer for a long time trying to find an alternative to that fur collar coat, but there was nothing out there that came close. Well, I lie, a couple of Burberry trenches hit the mark, they just didn't hit the fashion nail on the head so I had to go with the high-end of the price-point scale. This is what I like to call an, 'investment moment.' It's a classic coat that will stick around forever so I don't have too much guilt throwing it into the mix.

The rest of the equation was simple, from the sweater to the cargo pants tucked in to those amazing Alberta Ferretti boots. The trick here is to not let the boots wear you. If you're not an over-the-knee girl and wouldn't feel comfortable working this look, by all means, work your way into the riding boot trend and go for something that hits right below the knee. You're still making a statement, it's just in-line with who you are, which is what this is all about. I use the term 'inspiration' when it comes to the runway for a reason.

There you have it, one of my all-time favorite Fall runway looks, boiled down into a step-by-step shopping list to get you started on the cooler temps coming your way.

How to Wear Wide Leg Pants, Inspired by Akris

How to Wear Wide Leg Pants for Fall, Inspired by the Akris Runway

I love wide leg pants and have for a long time, whether they have been deemed on trend or not. The look is a classic one whenever thrown into any ensemble, so I was thrilled when we selected this Akris runway pick to re-create.

Here's the runway inspiration:

source: www.style.com

The overall layout on the look boils down to a neutral pant and printed sweater that coordinates (or in the runway look, practically bleeds into) with the color of the pant. Focus is on an easy wide leg and playful print on top creating a sophisticated but vibrant (not-a-wallflower) look. See how to pull it off in four simple steps:

1. J. Crew Tippi sweater in colorblock stripe (www.jcrew.com) 2. ASOS Wide Leg Pants With Tab Side (www.us.asos.com) 3. Majo "BOCG 35" Rosa (Grey) Leather Medium Hobo (www.shirise.com) 4. Sacha London Women's Nice Pump (www.endless.com)

A couple of tweaks happened here when moving from runway to reality, hence using the term 'inspiration,' when referring to the image from the catwalk. It's the perfect foundation and starting point to get someone to think outside of what they would normally reach for in their closet, but at the same time, can be tailored to anyone's personal style.

I swapped out stripes for the plaid going with the Tippi sweater from J. Crew. There's still color, but I kept it on the subtle side.

Pair that sweater back to the wide leg pant from Asos, tab side details add a little 'oomph' to these puppies, and you have a clean look that goes a little bit beyond preppy, another reason I happen to like it. The wider cut on the pant keeps things from being too tailored and refined, which is when the epitome of both of those descriptors is added back in with the sweet Sacha London slingback pump.

And finally, you have to have a bag to keep your world in as your out and about, might as well have it be a fabulous one. Here's the Rosa hobo from my new favorite label, Majo. Kind of loving the details going on there. It's just one more way to take this look from expected to original.

How to Wear | A Summer Sweater

How to wear a summer sweater, right. Well, I suppose I'll begin with this...There's a side of me that has always wanted to be the west coast, beach happy, sufer-chick. And by, 'chick,' I'm of course referencing an independent woman who frolics in the Cali sun all day with a smile on her face and a tan that only comes from days spent walking beaches. Just easy, peaceful, grounded and having major life questions that run the gammut from:

1. when the next wave will come in, to 2., what time I should plan on being back from the farmers market to start on a gorgeously divine organic dinner that can only be eaten in the company of good friends, bottles of good wine, love, laughter, and of course, I gotta have my fire pit.

This is just one side of this East Coaster's ever-growing montage of 'big-life' dreams. There are many sides, but for now, I'll stick with the So-Cal inspiration and pull together a look that makes me think of what I'd wear along the way.

See how to wear one of the holiest (think less Bible holy, and more swiss cheese hole-y) summer sweaters I've seen yet? Question answered, but first, check out the inspiration for this look:

Now it's time to get to the best part. The part that satisfies the control-freak in me, and that is the shop-by-number montage that I'm in love with because it's the closest thing to a list I have been able to pull off on here. What is it about a good list right? And marking off lines on said list? It's like mainlining happy juice. It's cool, I've been like this my entire life, I'm good with it. Moving right along...

1. BCBGMAXAZRIA 'Melia' Open Knit Dolman Sleeve Sweater (shop online: www.nordstrom.com) 2. Alexander Wang Mini Skirt (shop online: www.yoox.com)  3. IRO Ellen ribbed silk tank (shop online: www.theoutnet.com)  4. Heather Benjamin "Sea" Blue Mexican Turquoise Ring (shop online: www.endless.com)  5.  Jerome Dreyfuss Johan Bag (shop online: www.dianiboutique.com) 6. ASOS FLIGHT Leather Beaded Flat Sandals (shop online: www.asos.com)

Obviously this starts off with the focal point of the 'how to wear,' ensemble, and that is the sweater from BCBGMAXAZRIA. The holes present an opportunity to layer, and by all means, unless you want to give 'em a show, I'd highly recommend pairing the sweater with a tank like the one above from Alexander Wang.
Cut to the mini skirt, and 3.1 Phillip Lim is to the rescue, yet again. It's not a 'dumb' (aka basic) mini that you could find anywhere. I'm not saying a basic wouldn't work well here, it would, but it's all about the details and taking it from a potential of white denim to this cream, pocketed skirt with seaming detail, brings the entire look to a new level that leans a bit further into the chic end of the fashion pool.
Finally, some color already! The ring, it's like having a piece of the Pacific floating on your finger. It's a must-have and can cover day to evening when it comes to looks. The bag. I die for the bag, and yes, I'm paraphrasing the greatness that is Rachel Zoe because I've watched each season and loved every minute. It rubs off, and I couldn't be happier about that. Jerome Dreyfuss has some of the most unbelievable leathers out there. This I learned after petting one too many leather bags from my time spent in the buying offices on the seventh floor of one of the country's most recognized luxury retailers. This was also know as my second home at the time since I hardly ever saw the light of day. Fun times, crazy times, happy to have moved on. Not name dropping though. It's not how I roll.
But I can tell you that the bag is going to feel like, 'buttah.' Not butter, I said, 'buttah.' Make sure you get it treated so you can guard against stains, water, and all the other scary natural elements out there.
Now that we have the pop of soft blue back to the greys and creams going on  here, it's time to tie it in with e neutral-ish sandal. It's a fun take on the normal thong sandal but doesn't go overboard with color or detail, allowing the rest of the look to do what it does so well, just that.
So there you have it. How to wear a summer sweater with more holes than my new perforated Pour la Victoire satchel. I'll keep my west coast dreams alive with this one, and hopefully inspire some other dreams out there.
