Fashion Mad-Lib: I'm a Rectangle Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear this Weekend

The Rectangle Body type can handle the draping going on with the cowl neckline and the volume on the sweater. But if there's too little structure on top AND bottom, then you fall into a column-like look. Cue: the streamlined jean to hug a bit where you want it to and a scarf to also help balance out proportions. With some height, the flats work. If you want to dress it up or elongate, go with a heel via a pump, sandal, or boot. The rest of the look is all about keeping the accessories neutral.

The lace detail on the top is on-point for Pear Body Types. You can bring the drama on the top half of the fashion equation every time as it balances out your proportions with your bottom half. The layer of the army jacket on top of the feminine lace is a mix of masculine/femme, but when it comes to working with your body types, this look shows you how you can layer up and stick with the idea of adding to your top half to balance out the bottom half. Keep in mind, it's not about adding bulk or extra volume, and definitely make sure tops don't fall past your hips.

BOTTOM_whyitworksheader(1)

The super-saturated, dark wash skinny jean is one solid color and dark enough that it will streamline while keeping things casual. If you want to elongate further with the skinny jean, you can add a pump or heeled boot.

REST_whyitworksheader(1)

The rest of the look is all about keeping accessories simple. You already have plenty going on with the top and the jacket, so keep the rest toned down. The d'orsay flat is a classic black, but with some subtle hardware on the straps. It's an easy way to add some interest to a basic black flat. The sunnies are a classic Ray Ban wayfarer, but you could always swap things out with an aviator silhouette. The ring and the tote bring the look into focus without distracting from anything.

TOP_whyitworksheader(1)

A loose cowl-neck is a great way to  add a little drama and bring the eye upward. The hem on this sweater drapes unevenly which should prevent it from falling too far below the waist and over the hips. If that happens, pass. Make sure the sweater hits slightly below the waist and not any longer The cowl neck is further exaggerated with the addition of a printed infinity scarf. Here's your chance to fold in some color on this Fall-centric look.

BOTTOM_whyitworksheader(1)

The wash on this skinny jean is clean with very little distressing and no pockets popping out where you don't want them to, a key detail for Pear Body Types. Make sure the wash is medium to dark. You could also switch it up with a black wash.

REST_whyitworksheader(1)

The navy suede ballet flat is another small way to add some subtle color while keeping everything pulled together. It's in those tiny details that you can make a look your own. A woven chocolate brown bag is neutral enough to work into almost any look, and this satchel is large enough to hold anything you'd need on the weekend. Finally, a few rings to add some hardware into the picture. Layer on more rings or bracelets to add more 'oomph.' With the scarf and cowl neck, a necklace and earring would just get covered up so you can leave them out.

Fashion Mad-Lib: I'm an Hourglass Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear on Weekdays While Running Errands, Going to Lunch, and More

TOP_whyitworksheader(1)

The Hourglass Body Type can handle almost anything you throw at it. This sweater works IF the fit is slightly snug, not body-conscious, but shows a bit of shape, i.e. the fabric shouldn't fall too far away from your body or else you cover up all the assets you have going for you. The v-neck flatters and it's a great way to throw in color to an otherwise basic look.

BOTTOM_whyitworksheader(1)

The boot-cut jean fits along the thigh, hugs your curves, and with a slight flare at the hem, adds a little more dimension to keep your naturally balanced proportions, well, balanced. It also allows you to pull off a flat without going to narrow along the leg line if it were a skinny jean.

REST_whyitworksheader(1)

The flat is throw into the mix to show you how to take a basic look and make it your own using print. Color can also be used. Keep the jewelry simple, you can go silver or gold (shown above), and bracelets or necklaces are not out of the option. A bold statement necklace (color or metallic) on it's own would also be something that will take the look and dress it up a bit instantly. The neutral bag speaks for itself as it's an essential every woman needs to lug around her life's contents in throughout the day.

LTDACCESSPOSTSSIGNUPTEASER

How-to Tuesdays | How to Wear Pastels & Not Look Like an Easter Egg

It sounds simple enough, but all too often, mixing pastels can go very wrong very quickly. So, how do you pull off those pale pastels and make them look modern on holidays that don't involve talking white bunnies and egg hunts? Before I get to that answer, I have another question for you:

Do you remember paint-by-number? Right, well this is Style-by-Number. There's no paint brush involved, but it is the simplest, step-by-step formula to getting the look you want (for your body type). You won't even miss the brush, promise. It's the exact same premise as the fail-proof canvases you remember so well. Everything is laid out for you, all you have to do is connect the dots.

So, on to the answer, here's one way to wear pastels for an easy, polished daytime look:

Looks used as inspiration are a fabulous thing. I've used them to help my personal styling clients see new ways to wear what they have in their closets time and time again. You've got your glossy mags, catalogs, and let's not even get started on the Pinterest boards. Inspiration is not scarce, this we know. What IS missing from the equation is how to actually pull off these looks for YOUR personal BODY TYPE.

Knowing what to wear is one thing. Knowing how to wear it is a fundamental part of building one's wardrobe and updating your personal style. You can't have one without the other. Scratch that, you can have one without the other but it tends to leave you with a full closet and nothing to wear. Sound familiar?

Today's How-to Tuesday look is perfect for a couple of the body types. I'll break it down for you and give you a snippet of what you can expect to receive in your monthly Body Type Lookbooks (more to come on that very soon).

For now, Hourglass ladies, this one is for you, and I'll tell you why:

The blouse offers some coverage while the v-neck elongates. The neckline is also where you can show off your assets without going too far. It's a family-show kind of look with a little edge after all. The neutral beige on top is your best friend when pairing it back to a pastel. Balance out the colors out a bit so you don't go overboard with brights.

The flare leg, Isabel Marant jean works well for several body types actually. Not only does the silhouette work for Hourglasses, but Apples and Rectangles can play here too. If you fear the flare, by all means, go for a toned down version in a boot cut. No harm done. The goal is to balance out the proportions on top with the bottom half of the look. Pears can pass due to the color. Go with something in a darker wash.

Tip: If the top hits too far below the waist of the jean, this look is out for you Hourglasses. With this look you want to highlight the narrowest part of your frame, your waist, and if the shirt goes on forever, you're defeating the whole point.

If you have a longer torso you can always tuck it in. If you're short-waisted, then make sure you leave it out, or just switch to a classic, clean v-neck tee. The fit of the top should be close to the body at the bust-line and then stay streamlined from there, but not too body-hugging (i.e. it shouldn't make you feel like a stuffed sausage). The jeans follow suit with those fit guidelines.

The shoes (love, love, love, obsessed, adore...) are perfect to pair with the look because they're subtle and neutral. You will also be able to put them with a ton of other spring/summer looks you have. The focus is not on the shoes, plus the flare leg will cover them up so don't waist your time there. The cross-body bag is probably, along with the jean, one of the more trend-forward pieces in this style-by-number equation. I fell in love with the lavender. A 'cooler' hue works well back to the warm pink on the jeans so if lavender isn't your thing, go for a pale, dusty blue or just put everything back to a butterscotch brown satchel and pass on the pastel all together.

This look is for you to use as inspiration, so mix-and-match as you choose. Like I mentioned earlier, style-by-number was inspired by paint-by-number, but this time around, you're definitely allowed to pick what colors you want to go where. And if you're anything like me, this will be nothing new to you (visual: paint-by-number canvases of my 10 year old past self showing scenes of lake houses that had magenta roofs, coral waters, and robin's egg blue trees; following directions have never been my thing).

On to more inspiration on everything from what to wear to how to wear it for your body type, all right here.

PEARS: Looks 1 and 3 are where you'll be playing along here. The top layers will balance out the volume on the bottom of this sleeveless dress, evening things out a bit. Always, always wear a heel on this look.
RECTANGLES: All-skate. Feel free to pick from look 1 thru 5. This is a dress that will give you curves without going overboard so play a bit with the different ways you can pull it off.
HOURGLASSES: Looks 2 and 5 are your friend. This dress is only going to accentuate the classic hourglass shape you're working with so keeping things as simple and streamlined as possible will be key. Again, heel heel heel. Not a flat moment for you.
APPLES: Finally, my apple ladies. Look 2, 4 (if you have the height) and look 5 are where you will be living when it comes to this line up. The bottom half of the skirt will balance out the inverted triangle proportion your working with. If you're petite in stature, avoid look 2 at all costs. It will do the exact opposite of elongate you. As for the other two looks, have at it and do a little twirl in that scuba dress.

Sleeveless dresses are just one fashion sub-category of sooooo sooooo many. There's always more where that came from. Style Tutorial #3 | 1 Joie Top, 8 Ways to Wear It

Time for another StyleShaker Style Tutorial. Put down the blue books and No. 2 pencils people. This is all about soaking up some inspiration. No pop quizzes. Promise.

The Joie Berkeley silk top was a recent find that I had to play with and serve up, Mix Master style (i.e. think of Cher's closet from the movie Clueless and you'll understand a bit more of what I mean when I throw down terms like 'mix' and 'master' all in the same sentence this early on a Monday morning). The bottom line on this top? It's just too versatile not to create looks with. Let alone the fact that it's a universally flattering silhouette.

First things first, here a quick intro, from me, to you, on what today's post is all about:

PEARS: You're all about Looks- 2,4,5, and 8. The trick here is to balance out your silhouette with what you're wearing on top, AND, keep a heel in the equation to elongate. So, if you're going the skinny jean route, the Joie top is a perfect piece to pull off the look. Leave it loose and untucked. And again, keep a higher heel to keep extending the eye-line vertically.
RECTANGLES: All skate. You can pick and choose your favorite look, 1-8, and try it on.
HOURGLASSES: Look 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are your friend. Look one is too much fabric for an hourglass silhouette. You can pull it off, but it's not the best look to accentuate your classic shape. Look 3 is going to flare a bit at the waist so if you're watching your hip action, go for the pencil skirt look as an alternate.
APPLES: Finally, my Apple ladies. Looks 3, 5, and 7 are going to be the looks you should gravitate towards. They are the perfect mix of clothing and accessories that will help balance out your inverted triangle proportions seamlessly.

Style Tutorial #2 | How to Wear Maxi Skirts. 1 Ted Baker Skirt, 5 Ways to Wear It

Question: How to wear maxi skirts? Answer:
The maxi skirt can definitely be a polarizing piece when it comes to any woman's wardrobe. You either love it, or you have no clue what to do with it. But before I get to far ahead of myself, it's time for a proper introduction on the topic:

Personally, I love the way it can look when styled out appropriately, seems like an obvious statement, but it can go stylistically south in the blink of an eye. The key to a maxi is knowing how to pull it off and whether your body type is going to work well in this tricky silhouette. What else is new right? I know, but I'm about to tell you how to figure out which body type works best in which look so the work is pretty much done for you. Um, yay!
Just because something's a trend, doesn't mean you must have it, contrary to the content filling up fashion columns each month. If it works for you, fabulous, more maxi skirt power to you. If not, move along to what you feel good in and the pieces that work best for your body type (again, I'm here to help you figure that out.) See one gorgeous, super-spring like maxi skirt from Ted Baker and five options for how to wear it below. Then check out what body type each look belongs to. From there, it's full-on shopping and inspiration. Let's get the ball rolling with a quick video:

The 'How to Wear Maxi Skirts Video' is just one piece of the fashion puzzle. Next up, shop what you saw. But first, here's a close up of the looks from the video showing off five ways to wear this one color blocked maxi from Ted Baker:

Body Types HEADER
body type img
To my Pear shaped ladies, the best looks for your body type are going to be Look 1 and Look 5. The layering will help even out the proportions on the top half of your body whether it's via the fitted leather motorcycle jacket or the chambray shirt (which I would leave untied at the hem and laying over the waist.
Rectangles: You can work out any of the above Looks (*note the below advice when it comes to height; this may be the only exception). Why? The maxi has small pleating details that will help define your waist back to any of the above top options.
Hourglass ladies, my people, the best looks for your body type are going to be Look 1, Look 3, and Look 5. There's a catch. If you go with Look 1 or Look 3, since the hourglass proportions can sometimes give a short-waisted look and feel, you will want to elongate your torso with the layers you use under the leather jacket and vest. Wear something, a tank or fitted tee, that falls just a bit below the jacket and vest but not all the way over your hips. This tricks the eye line and lengthens (visually) the mid-section. I do this all the time and it works wonders, but again, don't go too far with the under-pinning (top), the goal isn't to cover up, it's to elongate.
Finally, for the Apples of the bunch, your best bets are going to be Looks 1 and 5 as long as the shirt and jacket are fitted and not boxy. The idea of a layer on top to streamline a bit works only if that layer is not a bulky one. The last thing you'd want to do is add unnecessary volume so keep the top have a clean-cut and close to the body as possible. The pleats and length of the skirt will balance things out a bit.
**One caveat to this skirt is something I haven't mentioned and that is height. The less height you have, the less affinity you should have towards a maxi skirt or dress for that matter. It can be done, but is pulled off best when the skirt or dress in question cinches at  your narrowest spots (waist, etc). A pleated maxi skirt or maxi dress with extra volume is not your best friend. Instead, opt for a shorter summery dress with a wedge to add some height. Just a little style side note.

Maxi skirts are just one category of sooooo sooooo many. There's always more where that came from. Check out the pieces that are pulled each week while digging for my clients. They're all lined up, all of the favorite picks from my favorite shopping spots on-line, in the StyleShaker Closet.

I've had this pair of brown suede ankle boots in my closet for months now. Case in point, they haven't seen the light of day and we're already in January so it was time to pull them out and work them into a look. I'm finally going to see Silver Linings Playbook, I can't take any more gushing about how good the movie is from friends. I need to see it for myself, mind you, now I have this massive build up so hopefully it lives up to the hype. But really, now that I know what I'm wearing, I'm pretty much good with however it goes, Oscar-wirthy or not.

Back to the ankle boots that I found lurking in my closet, practically begging me to get out there with their plea, 'put me in coach, I'm ready.' What? Your shoes don't speak to you? How sad for you.

At the end of the day it style can be boiled down into three steps that I believe are mutually exclusive: there's what to wear, how to wear it, and what you're going to do in it. Obviously you need to know what to wear (not just trends mind you; as we all know, they come and they definitely go). But what good is having that without knowing how to wear it in a way that works for you right? And really, what's the point of it all if you don't have a great storyline to take the ensemble on an adventure in?

Need a little help with this? Who doesn't? Get your own Virtual Weekly Lookbook that covers each of these while stylishly serving up a week of looks personalized to you for under twenty bucks. It's a no-brainer...Get on the list here.

In an effort to check all three off my own list, here's what I'm wearing, how I'm wearing it, and what I'll be doing in it. I never said the 'adventure' had to be something for the books, it's all about what you make out of it. In my case, the look is going be on my back while I get to take in Bradley Cooper on the big screen, knock back some popcorn, and sip on a glass of wine (best thing to ever hit theaters as far as I'm concerned). Can't wait. Here's the look:

At the beginning of every week I pull together some inspirational looks to choose from when I need to figure out what I'm going to wear to certain events on the agenda. I have a massive look library that I use so this isn't as out of control as one would imagine. Well, maybe it is, but then again, I keep that Looks Library at hand and always growing not only for myself but for the weekly lookbooks I send to my clients on a regular basis. Inspiration is always a good thing to have. They keep me creative and sane.

I ended up going with look two this week. It just spoke to me. Mainly, I wanted to do the whole open-front cardi with leggings thing since I knew it would be a bit chilly and that cardigan is the equivalent of having a cozy blanket to cuddle up in while I watch the movie. The rest of these looks go right back to the Looks Library, sans dewey decimal system, to be saved for a later date...

This is not just a pretend post people, I'm actually going to the movie. I figure, if I don't use my own Virtual Lookbook styling process, then why would anyone else right? Well, I do, and here's where I'll be later tonight, love the Angelika, so come by and join me if you're in Dallas:

Had to throw in a movie poster for now, but later I'm sure I'll have pics to share when I recap my week...I'll let you know what I thought of the movie as well, as if you need one more opinion, I mean really. But after all, everyone's got one, especially on the web.

Like I mentioned, these looks are created by me, for me, and NOW for my growing list of clients.

I'm taking more on at the moment and the list is growing so make sure you get on there, oh you know, if you too wear only one eighth of what's hanging in your closet and are plagued weekly, if not daily (cue scene: you're standing in your closet, it's 6am, coffee in hand, eyes squinting at the harsh lighting, but more so the thought of having to figure out something new to wear, 'eh,' you say,'not today,' as you reach for the same old combination yet again because it's easy and you don't even want to think about it) with that 'what am I going to wear,' question. Yea, I know, that's why I started sharing this service with everyone I could get my hands on.

See what the Lookbook is all about, what people are saying, why you would want fashion advice from me in the first place, and why your twenty dollars (not even) will be the best you've spent in a long time, outside of any movies of course...

After you're done checking out the What to Wear Weekly Lookbook, make sure to keep the momentum going and soak up more on what to wear, how to wear it, and where to shop for it (let alone get ideas on what to do in it) right here.

What I'm Wearing Today. Wednesday's Look from a Fashion Industry Insider

What I'm Wearing Today? Think: Purple cropped pants:

No standing in front of the closet this morning. I picked out what I'm wearing today over the weekend and am loving myself for prepping ahead of time. Just one more step taken to simplify life a little bit. Every little bit helps right? So, time to get to it. Here's what I'm wearing today:

When it boils down to what I'm wearing today, I kept it pretty simple. The pop color in the pants takes a basic look and brings it into the realm of trendy, in a good way.

I'm obsessed with J. Crew's Minnie pant and am about to buy them in every color possible, seriously. The fit is amazing, the colors are killer, and the length hits right where I want it to, slightly above the ankle. Throw in a basic black tee and striped cardigan from Urban Outfitters, done and done. I'm looking at the shoes right now, and then the sky (grey and overcast), so I'm thinking I'm going to make a last minute addition of some flats.

As for the accessories, the Pour la Victoire bag can fit a small child in it, not that I have one or would ever do that, but it holds everything you could ever imagine needing throughout your day. The layered bracelets add a subtle touch and finally, a black enamel statement ring finishes off the look.

It's going to be a rainy day filled with a few meetings so these pants will keep the mood up, and the look will keep me completely comfy moving from one room to the next.

That's today's look. See more looks, past and present, what to wear and how to wear it when it comes to the latest trends in fashion, all right here.

Product Review | Low Luv x Erin Wasson's Domed Cage Ring

The Latest Product Review Video has Arrived, and This Time I'm Talking Statement Rings

It's time for another product review post on-line shopping spree last week. What's on the docket this time around? Well, I love a good statement ring now and again, especially when the overall look and feel edges on masculine. But that's just a personal style preference. If you're like me, it's time to check out the ring in question. Meet the Domed Cage ring  from Low Luv x Erin Wasson, a favorite name of mine when it comes to all things jewelry. Did the love fest continue once I got this ring on my pretty little finger? First, the product shot (click to shop).

Check out the product review video right here and get all of my thoughts on the edgy statement ring:

So at the end of the day, when it comes to the product reviews, like I mentioned, there are four key points to The StyleShaker rating system on a scale from 1 to 5 (5 being the best). Here they are:
1. Shipping & Delivery: 5 (Shopbop.com manages to do this oh, so, well, every time)
2. Fit: 5 (I finally figured out my ring size, chart here, so this was a no-brainer)
3. Construction: 5 (no problems here)
4. Value:  4 (it's silver plated so at $45 I'm not overjoyed, but it's not killing me either)
Glowing product review right? Overall, this Low Luv x Erin Wasson ring gets itself a happy face. I'm kind of in love with it, can't you see the elation? Such a ham, I know. But playing with DSLR cameras can be so much fun.

In the mean time, if you're still not sold on this statement ring or you're looking for something else a little bit closer to your style speed, see more of my edited down jewelry picks from the virtual shopping list here:

Meet & Greet | Pamela Love

I love discovering new names out there. There's so much talent that it's almost overwhelming to begin to approach, but having spent ten years playing in the ranks at one of the country's largest luxury retailers, looking beyond a label means something to me. The brand name is paramount to any designer, but so is the integrity behind what they create, and often times, those two concepts don't necessarily synch up. Pamela Love is not one of those cases.

Love is New York based, and has developed quite the following. You're about to see  why...

I stumbled across her work some time ago, but recently her name resurfaced after having watched the show The Fashion Fund (currently on hulu). It walks through the process CFDA candidates go through from nomination to win, and it is truly fascinating. Love, to me, really stood out within the group of brilliant designers as an artist, let alone with the pieces she created.

She lives and breathes what she creates, and the aesthetic stays true to who she is.  Not to mention, her jewelry is sick, in the best of ways. It's original, the price points are approachable, and most of all, it really is the definition of wearable art. Each piece is within itself a statement.

Time to show you the line up of all things by Love, to love:

1. I thought I'd start it off with something that screams originality. When  is the last time you saw something like this executed so well? I adore it and the Lookbook shot really brings things to life.

2. Statement necklace, redefined.

3. A ring I am drooling over. It's officially going on the shopping list.

4. Again with the statement necklaces. The details are so insane on this. Spoiler alert: you're about to see this pick coordinate with a look in tomorrow's How to Wear it post.

5. The pieces have an edge that I'm drawn to, and yet the details keep the look refined in an organic way. Not easy to do. Another spoiler alert, this ring is also a part of this week's How to Wear it look. I can't get enough of this stuff!

1. Pyramid Hand Piece (shop online: www.bonadrag.com)  2. Zellij Breastplate (shop online: www.bonadrag.com)  3. Red Jasper Mountain Ring (shop online: www.bonadrag.com)  4. Pamela Love Zellij Pendant Necklace (shop online: www.shopbop.com)  5. Pamela Love Cross Ring in Silver (shop online: www.shopgoldyn.com)

So, if you didn't know, now you know about Pamela Love. I'm truly inspired by her as a person and an artist. Looking forward to what she comes up with next.
