Get My Look | What I Wear to Pay Homage to the Hourglass Silhouette

Setting the intention: With everything I do on this site, my intention is simply to inspire you. It always has been and it always will be. Should you crack a smile on top of this, then my day is made. On to the Get My Look post.

Remember Fruit Stripe Gum? Remember how not good it was and yet we still went back to it for some reason? Anyway, nostalgic moment aside, the stripes kept me coming back for more (along with the instantaneous sugar fix) back in the eighties, and they still do the same thing for me today. Case in point, I found this striped pencil skirt and have been obsessed with it ever since.

Note: Don't freak out about having stripes on the lower half of your body. I'm not going to say this look is for everyone, that's not the point. But I can tell you that the old fashion rule that has kept so many (I hear this from clients all the time, almost as much as I get the wearing white after Labor Day or mixing metals question...almost) running in the opposite direction of a simple stripe is not necessary. Sure, if you have bright, wide stripes running right across the widest part of your body, you may want to walk away. But there's definitely a way to incorporate stripes into any fashion equation, even when it involves the bottom half of a look.

Case in point, here's today's look, what I wear when I want to work all angles of my hourglass silhouette & embrace a strong stripe moment without crossing over the line into Tacky Land (it's a scary place filled with bedazzled belts & tie-dyed hair scrunchies). Time to Get My Look:

Get My Look | The Body Type Breakdown: Obviously this is going to go well with most hourglass silhouettes. The stripes are thin enough at the hip to keep things looking long and lean, not the other way around. If that was a big wide yellow stripe, I would not be using the skirt in any look. But what about the other body types out there? How does this pencil skirt look stack up for the Pears, the Rectangles, and the Apples of the bunch? Good question...here's your answer:

body type img with checks

Rectangles, you are good to go. Hourglasses, this one is made for you if you're ok with flaunting what you've got. There's a way to do it without giving away all the mystery. This would be it. There's something about putting it all on display that reads a little boring to me. I know, I know, not the descriptor you would think I'd use, but it just says to me that there's little creativity there. There are ways to highlight your assets, and I whole-heartedly believe in doing that. Key word: highlight, not shine a spotlight on. The tank top is body-conscious, along with the skirt, so there's a definite silhouette that is drawn, but at least there's coverage and a little print (in this case, stripes) to keep things interesting. Throw in the accessories, and it all goes from interesting to polished.

Pears, you may want to go with a solid color on this one. You could try the stripes, but solids would be a better bet.

Apples, this exact look is not necessarily in your style 'wheelhouse.' Try going with a top that moves a bit further away from the torso, maybe a looser tee, but keep the constructed neckline. You want to add a little volume, again, something in the form of a peplum and not just bulk, to the waist to balance out your proportions. It's always worth trying out, but again, this is not your go-to look as shown. Tweak a little bit here and there, and you're good to go!

There's always more where that came from. Loving the pencil skirt but maybe wanting to find something sans stripes? What about the black top? Love it but a v-neck is not exactly what you're going for? No worries. It's all about having options and they're lined up right here, along these virtual shelves (updated weekly) for you to pick and chose from. Style Tutorial #3 | 1 Joie Top, 8 Ways to Wear It

Time for another StyleShaker Style Tutorial. Put down the blue books and No. 2 pencils people. This is all about soaking up some inspiration. No pop quizzes. Promise.

The Joie Berkeley silk top was a recent find that I had to play with and serve up, Mix Master style (i.e. think of Cher's closet from the movie Clueless and you'll understand a bit more of what I mean when I throw down terms like 'mix' and 'master' all in the same sentence this early on a Monday morning). The bottom line on this top? It's just too versatile not to create looks with. Let alone the fact that it's a universally flattering silhouette.

First things first, here a quick intro, from me, to you, on what today's post is all about:

Like I said, one top (from Joie) and eight, count 'em, eight ways to wear it. Here's the Lookbook Video:

PEARS: You're all about Looks- 2,4,5, and 8. The trick here is to balance out your silhouette with what you're wearing on top, AND, keep a heel in the equation to elongate. So, if you're going the skinny jean route, the Joie top is a perfect piece to pull off the look. Leave it loose and untucked. And again, keep a higher heel to keep extending the eye-line vertically.
RECTANGLES: All skate. You can pick and choose your favorite look, 1-8, and try it on.
HOURGLASSES: Look 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are your friend. Look one is too much fabric for an hourglass silhouette. You can pull it off, but it's not the best look to accentuate your classic shape. Look 3 is going to flare a bit at the waist so if you're watching your hip action, go for the pencil skirt look as an alternate.
APPLES: Finally, my Apple ladies. Looks 3, 5, and 7 are going to be the looks you should gravitate towards. They are the perfect mix of clothing and accessories that will help balance out your inverted triangle proportions seamlessly.

Silk shortsleeve blouses are just one fashion category of sooooo sooooo many. There's always more where that came from. Check out the pieces that are pulled each week while digging for my clients. They're all lined up, all of the favorite picks from my favorite shopping spots on-line, in the StyleShaker Closet.

5 Pencil Skirt Options to Shop for an Upcoming Interview

A good friend of mine is about to be in the interview chair for the first time in a long time, and nothing helps build you up for that better than feeling good about what you're wearing.

I've been known to wear the same Burberry jacket to several interviews because in my mind, it's my cape. I'm superwoman in that thing.

The environment my friend will be walking into, eh hem, I meant power-walking into, will be business casual. The word 'casual' when applied to attire is a definite change of pace (understatement) from her current role that has her walking the halls of a major luxury retailer where the morning greetings are a simultaneous combination involving the quick up-and-down scan of what you're wearing and the words, "good morning." They're multi-taskers over there.

The 'clackers' do exist, but they're much friendlier in real life.

Trust me, you get used to it, but casual dress is definitely not on the radar when you spend practically every waking minute working in that kind of environment.

So, the name of the game is finding the perfect pencil skirt that will hit the sweet spot of looking polished without coming across as stiff or uppity. Is that even a real word? Googled it, evidently it is. Moving along...Here are 5 pencil skirt options that will help her get in the right frame of mind to ace the interview, as if she needed any help. The woman is brilliant.

The Love List | Today's Top 10 Shopping List Picks that Just Hit the Web

It's time for another list of the top 10 favorites to shop, right, now. I'm constantly scouring the web for the personal shopping side of the biz, so it's only natural that I share what I find. Every week I check out the top shopping spots on the web and pull in all of the new arrivals I love. The StyleShaker Closet is always in a state of flux, as it should be. The shopping list never ends, it's like the circle of life, sans Simba.

Today I fell in love with a Nicholas K '2fer' jacket from Free People that I have never seen anything like, an Ikat skinny jean from Sass & Bide that will undoubtedly steal the thunder on any look at Net-a-Porter (read: wear with a neutral), a hi/low dress from Nicole Miller at Bloomies in a cobalt blue that still has me holding my breath, a pair of ankle strap sandals WITH a stacked heel from NastyGal, and the perfect black bag from Phillip Lim at Shopbop. That's only five out of ten. See what else made today's shopping list:
