2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: This sweater is half-sweet, half-sass with the shoulder embellishments going on. Leave it to J.Crew to take a classic, turn it on it's head, and create a new take on the basic crew neck. Love that. Hourglass body types, you can take the added 'oomph' of those jeweled shoulders because you're going to balance things out on the bottom of the look. The name of the game is to stick to the naturally proportionate curves you're working with. They're a good thing. No, scratch that, they're a great thing. Own it. Oh, and on that note, reason #2 this works is because the sweater isn't too voluminous. It will hug and not cover you up. The latter would make you look bigger than you are. Boo.

The bottom: These waxed jeans from Isabel Marant for H&M had to make it in somewhere and this was the perfect spot. All pretty and polished up top, slightly prepster (um, it is J.Crew after all), and then you go below the natural waistline to find a little biker-inspired toughness. Mix and match, go with the unexpected, it's always a good time if you keep things balanced out. These jeans aren't super skinny, but they aren't boyfriend either. They're right in the middle and will flatter your shape. Super curvy hourglass ladies out there, the zipper details are going to accentuate those hips, so if that freaks you out, you can always opt for a black, straight leg (or boot-cut, a bit more traditional in look and feel) jean instead. Baby step it up to edginess or just bypass it all together. The point is, you're supposed to feel good in what you're wearing so, aim for that, and use this look for some direction so you can branch out of your style rut and upgrade a bit.

The rest: A classic black pump from Zara (i.e. on-point with style and brings the biker jean back down to earth with a little polish) levels the playing field on the look. The classic black satchel is taken up a notch with zipper details that mimic what's going on in those waxed jeans, love when two pieces play off of one another. And finally, a little statement ring to pull things together. You could go with a more bejeweled option if you want to bring out a more feminine side here, or just stick with something bold and show 'em what you've got.

The ONE thing you need to know: The pump is simple and black for good reason. You have a lot going on with this look and you don't need one more thing in the form of a snazzed-up shoe, ankle boot, or really anything. Less is more on the accessories since the clothing is doing all the talking here.

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: Rectangle body types, the sweater is bold, slightly cropped, and not at all fitted. All three things work well back to your straight, long lines.

The bottom: A boyfriend jean isn't for everyone, but Rectangles ladies out there you can handle it and make it work in your favor. The distressed action going on here, along with the easy volume found in every boyfriend jean cut, work well to balance out proportions and add a figure to your figure.

The rest: Cuff the jean, throw on an ankle boot, cuff things off with something silver, and throw in a colorful, albeit subtle, clutch option for a night out.

The ONE thing you need to know: This look works for a casual dinner out, but you could also pull this off for daytime in a cinch. Just swap out the clutch for a larger, neutral tote. Make sure, when it comes to shoes (boots mainly) and bags, you stay away from a harsher black hue. Keep it soft. Think navy, grey, or even a faded butterscotch chocolate.

I'm an Hourglass Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear this Weekend

Hourglass body types, bring some red into your life courtesy of a knit. It is sweater season after all. Have at it:

sources: 1 Reiss Lewes Rib Rib Sleeve Jumper (www.reiss.com), 2 J.Crew Vintage straight jean in Abbott wash (www.jcrew.com), 3 Lola Cruz Ankle Boot (www.piperlime.gap.com), 4 Be & D Paige Messenger (www.piperlime.gap.com), 5 Lulu Frost for J.Crew Indian summer bracelet (www.jcrew.com)

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: Red is definitely a power color for all body types, not just you Hourglass ladies out there. Go bold. The cut on the sweater is a bit less tailored to your curves than we would normally suggest, but still remains loosely fitted without going into body-con territory, SO, you'll be comfortable and looking good. Comfort plays a large role in feeling good as you well know. And when you feel good, you look good. Circle of fashion life, ish. You know the drill.

The bottom: You can cuff these boyfriend jeans over the ankle boots if you have some height on you. If you're a more petite Hourglass  body type, opt for a pump, something that won't cut off the leg line at the ankle. Also, when you go for a boyfriend jean, go with something relaxed and not bulky through the hips. You don't want to conceal your curves with volume or you'll end up looking bigger than you actually are. Swap these jeans for a boot-cut with cleaner lines if you're just not sure.

The rest: This Lola Cruz ankle boot is getting a ton of 'buzz' on our Pin boards. Outside of the fact that these booties are popular, they're fabulous and functional. The in-between brown with a hint of bronze revs up what could have been a basic, go-to ankle boot. The Be & D (a favorite of ours in Handbag Land) satchel keeps it neutral, allowing the red to pop on that sweater, and the details in the statement bracelet, serve up a vintage vibe. A few additional colors come into the equation with this tiny yet powerful addition.

The ONE thing you need to know: Don't forget, if you go with a boyfriend jean, make sure it is 'relaxed' and not bulky. You should still be able to tell your a female. Don't go baggy, keep things falling close to your leg line so you don't lose those coveted Hourglass curves.

Rectangles, here's a way to wear lace during the day. Think we're crazy? Think again. Shop the look in 8 simple steps:

How Do I Wear This White Lace Dress from Express, Rectangle Body Type

sources: 1/ Express Lace Shift Dress (www.express.com), 2/ MADEWELL All-Weather Outbound Jacket (www.madewell.com), 3/ Isabel Marant for H&M Fringed Boot (www.hm.com), 4/ House of Harlow Sound Waves Cuff (www.nastygal.com), 5/ ONE by Jo Handbags Perforated Large Hobo (www.shopbop.com), 6/ Lieke Van Opstal CURVE Green Scarf (www.boticca.com), 7/ Nars Sheer Lipstick in Barbarella (www.beauty.com), 8/ Essie Nail Polish (www.target.com)

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: Rectangle body types can handle a little extra layering on top, in this case, it comes to you courtesy of a military jacket. The utilitarian vibe over the ultra-feminine lace detail going on in the dress is what we want here. Toughen it up, tone it down, all while balancing out your straight-line proportions. The addition of a scarf also accentuates the top half of your body. This little detail is also going to play a part when it comes to balancing out the look.

The bottom: The dress has seaming details at the waist to create a little added shape. This is something Rectangle Body Types can work to their advantage every time.

The rest: The fringed boot is going to balance out the layers on your top half because it's a bit more substantial than any other shoe that would have simpler, cleaner lines. Fringe is your friend on this one. The bag is big enough to hold everything you'll need for the day and stays neutral in color so it will blend right in. The size and slouchiness also helps tone down the laced-up dress, giving things a more 'daytime' feel. A simple gold bracelet sneaking out of the cuff on the jacket is all you need to polish things up a bit. The right nail and lip color will also help bring the look into focus.

The ONE thing you need to know: Keep the accessories neutral on this one and you'll be able to create a daytime look and feel. If you go bold with something, whether it's the bag or shoe, or even lip color, you may easily cross the line and throw things off.

Rectangles, love lace? Good. Here's a way to bring it into the board room, in just 7 shoppable steps:

How Do I Wear This White Lace Dress from Express, Rectangle Body Type

sources: 1/ Express Lace Shift Dress (www.express.com), 2/ TOPSHOP Petite Collarless Panel Jacket (www.topshop.com), 3/ Nly Viva Pump (www.nelly.com), 4/ Lulu Frost for J.Crew midnight moon tassel necklace (www.jcrew.com), 5/ Gorjana G-Pressed Ring (www.bloomingdales.com), 6/ MARC BY MARC JACOBS Leather Billy Hobo (www.stylebop.com), 7/ Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet (www.bergdorfgoodman.com)

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: The layer of the blazer over the lace dress works for your type for a number of reasons, one of which happens to be that Rectangle body types can carry off additional layers on top with the help of your column-like frame. A little added volume isn't going to hurt you, as a matter of fact, it helps bring some balanced proportions out of the woodwork. See how the blazer is slightly cinched and fitted? Right, that also helps to define your waist. Throw that back to the horizontal seaming details on the waist of the dress, sort of a double empire (not to be confused with a double rainbow), and you have even more waist-flattering details already sewn into the look. You don't even have to lift a finger, or (more importantly) do a crunch.

The bottom: Depending on your height, the hem on that dress is either going to make the cut for the workplace or be held for after hours. Outside of that, the fabric falls slightly away from the body, adding even more shape into the mix which is like fashion catnip for a Rectangle Body Type, or should be.

The rest: The black and cream going on with the blazer and dress is just asking for an injection of color right? Right. So, if we're going to bring things into a different end of the color spectrum using the pump, let's keep the bag neutral. Less is more. Plus, that way you can pop a red lip for the look if you're feeling bold, or, if you need the motivation to throw down during your presentation that day. Nothing works more like a superhero cape than the perfect shade of red lipstick. Blot to soften a bit, it is daytime after all. When you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you're bound to get some seriously powerful work done. Top things off with some gold accents, courtesy of a little wrap around ring and an elongated, tassel necklace.

The ONE thing you need to know: The blazer needs to stay along the lines of the above cut and not tread too far into oversized, boyfriend territory. You want to find the curves not let them fade away under it all.

Q&A: How Do I Wear This Lace Dress from Express?

lisette_edited-1

It's time for a little Q&A. Lisette asked, and Lisette shall receive. Real person, real question, real answers from our stylists to wear out in the (one more) real world. So many 'reals' we know. Moving right along. Here's the dress in question:

How Do I Wear This White Lace Dress from Express?

You're officially treading on virtual personal styling territory here. It's a good place to be and it's easy to get to. Send your styling questions here when you have something you just bought, or something sitting in your closet with the tags still on it, and have no clue how to wear it.

The question was, "how do I wear this lace dress from Express?" On to Lisette's answer...

HEADER_thelook

After gabbing with Miss Lisette and learning more about her lifestyle, body type, and what she's looking for in these looks, we came up with two. One look is for work and one look covers the more casual end of the spectrum. The magic word is versatility.

First up, let's take it slow with a casual ensemble:

How Do I Wear This White Lace Dress from Express, Rectangle Body Type

sources: 1/ Express Lace Shift Dress (www.express.com), 2/ MADEWELL All-Weather Outbound Jacket (www.madewell.com), 3/ Isabel Marant for H&M Fringed Boot (www.hm.com), 4/ House of Harlow Sound Waves Cuff (www.nastygal.com), 5/ ONE by Jo Handbags Perforated Large Hobo (www.shopbop.com), 6/ Lieke Van Opstal CURVE Green Scarf (www.boticca.com), 7/ Nars Sheer Lipstick in Barbarella (www.beauty.com), 8/ Essie Nail Polish (www.target.com)

Second look, it's time to pull it all together, polish it up, and get to work:

How Do I Wear This White Lace Dress from Express, Rectangle Body Type

sources: 1/ Express Lace Shift Dress (www.express.com), 2/ TOPSHOP Petite Collarless Panel Jacket (www.topshop.com), 3/ Nly Viva Pump (www.nelly.com), 4/ Lulu Frost for J.Crew midnight moon tassel necklace (www.jcrew.com), 5/ Gorjana G-Pressed Ring (www.bloomingdales.com), 6/ MARC BY MARC JACOBS Leather Billy Hobo (www.stylebop.com), 7/ Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet (www.bergdorfgoodman.com)

HEADER_why it works

We're working with a Rectangle body type here, and that means we have plenty of options to play with. The first, more casual look, balances out proportions on top with the bottom half by leveraging the top layer of the military jacket back to the fringed boot. Throwing a more casual jacket over a lace dress tones things down a bit, mixing masculine with feminine, which is an aesthetic that matches Lisette to a 't.' She knows what's up, has some edge to her look. but she also loves to play with accessories and soften things up a bit.

Lisette lives in San Francisco, so layering is key, not to mention a boot with a heel you can actually walk in. The scarf can be added into the look for chillier temps, the gold bangle adds some 'oomph' to the look, and the neutral bag will hold all of the necessities while blending right in. Finally, some beauty back-up courtesy of a peachy, pink lip from Nars and a grey nail. Love.

The second look brings things back into the professional environment by adding in a classic black blazer. Speaking of classic, the black Marc by Marc Jacobs hobo keeps things polished and leaves room for a subtle pop of color. This is an essential for every woman's closet in one variation or another. Time to talk about the pump. It's definitely a pop color and we love that. This is when your own personality can really start to come out of an everyday look. The red here isn't too in-your-face. The deep burgundy was very intentional and works well back to the lace on the dress. Why not inject some color into the office when you can right? The red lip may be pushing it overboard for day time, so keep it in the bag and layer it on before heading out to grab cocktails when the sun sets. The jewelry integrates into the look seamlessly by keeping it simple. A long necklace won't distract from the lace, but will add a little interest to the overall look and balance out proportions.

There you have it. One dress, two ways to wear it, and that was just us getting warmed up.

 2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: The contrast in pattern on the shoulders is going to bring the eye right to the top of your body. This works in your favor Rectangle body types, because you'll be creating proportionate embellishments with the boyfriend jean on bottom. A little balanced emphasis on top and bottom will help round out your naturally straight silhouette. Speaking of bottom...

The bottom: The boyfriend jean is a trend that not all body types can pull off. So, Rectangle body types, rejoice, you can cover this one easily. The added volume on the jeans, combined with the distressed details, are carried seamlessly by your versatile frame. If you're more petite when it comes to height, make sure you keep the heel going strong. Our styling suggestion is to fold the hem of jeans up to create cuffs, just a few inches tall. If you cuff it off, you're going to really want that heel in there to extend the vertical eye-line.

The rest: The addition of a statement necklace with a little color takes this look from basic to interesting. As a Rectangle body type, can carry the additional 'oomph' at your neckline, so go for it. An easy black bag works as well, staying in-line with the relaxed, yet pulled-together, feel. When have you ever gone wrong with a black pump right? The answer should be 'never.' If that's not the case, let us know, we need to hear about it. The pump takes this look from super-casual to a bit more cleaned up in one, quick, step.

The ONE thing you need to know: If you're not feeling the black pump, you can always go with a nude, peep-toe version, a wedge sandal depending on temps, or even a flat sandal if you have some height to pull that off.

Rectangle body types, the addition of the perfect jacket can instantly upgrade and add a little drama into your go-to work look. Try this one out:

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: Rectangle body types, you can and should accentuate your top half in any fashion equation. The lapel on this IRO jacket creates a little volume on top which will add some curves to your naturally straight shape.

The bottom: This is a trend-forward take on the classic pencil skirt cut. There's a little texture in there which will balance out what you're accentuating with the jacket on the top half of the look. Go with a basic black if you're office is beige-land, or by all means, liven the joint up a bit with an injection of color. Speaking of color...

The rest: These pumps are just one example of how you can play with your pumps. It's a personal, and completely emotional decision that is completely in your hands. Go with something that feels good, above all, you need to feel comfortable in what you're wearing so the look doesn't end up wearing you. That said, these looks are here to inspire you to step a smidge outside of your everyday fashion routine. Take pieces here and there, cross-reference what you have in your own closet, and baby step your way to an upgraded personal sense of style. A grey shoulder bag and neutral, edgy cuff will keep it pulled together while adding a little additional 'oomph' to the look.

The ONE thing you need to know: There's plenty of print and texture going on here. When it comes to the pencil skirt, keep it colorful but subtle. If you're going to pop some serious color on the bottom half, back to that jacket, make sure you go with a more basic pump. This works because the under-tones on each piece, minus the shoe, blend well together. Blues and grey naturally complement one another. The red is in there to shake things up a bit.

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: When it comes to the Pear body type, you always want to use your silhouette to play a bit on the top half of the ensemble. In this case, we're keeping it a bit more toned-down with the v-neck sweater, but with the addition of the statement necklace, you can make things instantly interesting. Work with your basics and accessorize to make a look your own. The most important thing to have is a strong core Closet/foundation.

The bottom: The skinny leg in a dark wash is your friend. A lot of Pear body types shy away from skinny leg jeans, and if you're petite, that makes sense. A boot cut would work better for you. But overall, the skinny jeans can work in your favor IF you keep them dark with limited embellishments like pockets or whiskering/distressing. Also, if you're going to go for a skinnier leg line keep the heel. Don't get mad at us, we know you'd rather prance around town in a flat (unless you're like some of our Editors who have yet to master that skill; flats make them nervous the way platform pumps do the rest of the world), but you need a heel to elongate your lower half.

The rest: P to the S, yes, you see sunnies on this. Sunnies, for a night out? Well, if it's spring/summer, this is a viable options. With daylight savings, not so much when you're 'falling back' an hour. The sunglasses show you this look works for day just as well as it does for evening. Loving the versatility on that.

The bag is a great way to take a basic look here and add some oomph. You're everyday bags are ones you should invest in, the trend pieces like this you can play a bit more with when it comes to materials. Check out the latest handbag picks to browse more (budget friendly) options in the Closet (link below). The pump keeps the lower half clean and polished. No cluncky boots please. Actually, a boot with a skinny leg for a Pear body type is a tough combination to pull off. If you had a black jegging with a streamlined black, heeled, mid-calf boot, you would be ok. The most flattering take on this though, is going to be something more polished and minimal like the pump.

The ONE thing you need to know: If you have a sweater like this with a bit more volume to it that extends out from the body at the hem, make sure that it stays above your hips. If this sweater brings weight past that natural waistline you're defeating the purpose of dressing for your body type entirely. Opt for something that wraps or fits snugly to the body instead.

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: The v-neck, check. Go for a v-neck whenever possible. You'll see examples on how to do this in the Style Guide if you haven't had a glimpse of it yet. Overall this sweater is super simple. Really, there's not much to it outside of the color and a little extra volume at the hem. A word to the wise for petite Apple body type women out there, make sure the volume on this sweater doesn't overwhelm your silhouette entirely. You'll throw everything out of whack by adding too much bulk and throwing off proportions. Instead, opt for a more fitted version of the same shape which, ps, you can find oh, everywhere (start with the StyleShaker Closet and go from there; link below).

The bottom: You can streamline to your heart's content on this one. Why? Because you have the height of that heel that will keep the vertical line extending. Usually, we'd recommend something more along the lines of a bootcut or slight flare in the way of denim, but skinnies work as well. The balancing out of your proportions is helped with that classic pump.

The rest: The statement necklace can be a tricky thing for Apple body types. Try out something a bit less substantial along the neckline, especially if the necklace you're going with sits a bit higher on your décolletage (cue: fancy fashion word). No need to draw focus where you're trying to do the exact opposite. If it is long enough, it will actually help focus the eye on the vertical line of your body which is always a good thing. Sunnies, yep, sunnies. The classic Ray Ban Wayfarers are still out there. They've be around, gone away, and come back with a vengeance, The trend is slowing but that doesn't mean they don't work well. It really all depends on the shape of your face so go with what you know works whether it's a larger frame, wayfarers, or aviators.

The ONE thing you need to know: There's one really quick, simple way for you to take this look from what to wear to what NOT to wear and that is to pair it with a flat. Flat shoe, flat boot, flat whatever, don't do it. If you have to go with a flat shoe because you need to walk like a normal human being or just don't have anything in your closet you feel like wearing with a heel (um, shop our closet, link below), then go with a bootcut jean in the same dark wash. Have it hemmed to fall right at the arch on the top of your foot so there's  not too much creasing, and go to town.

The top: Rectangles, the extra volume on this top is not going to be a problem. If it flares out too much at your natural waist however, you may want to throw in an extra layer of a fitted jacket (leather, maybe a blazer, etc.) just to be sure you don't lose your shape entirely. Since the sweater is basic and you do want to have a little something going on up there, the necklace comes to the rescue. You can definitely afford to go big with this or any other statement necklace (there are always new options lining the virtual shelves of the closet, link below).

The bottom: Skinny jeans aren't for everyone, but when it comes to the Rectangle body type, you will have no problems. For most types, if there's a skinny, there should be a heel, but Rectangles, you have options. Go with a ballet flat, a flat riding boot, or keep the pump. You can also play a bit with the wash on those jeans. If you wanted to do something a bit more distressed, possibly in a grey back to the pink, it's possible and it will flatter you silhouette.

The rest: We already touched on the pump. Feel free to swap it out depending on the agenda or your mood for the day. You're good to go with the necklace (per above). The bigger the better, especially when worn back to a substantial knit like this sweater. As far as sunglasses go, work with your favorite pair. The Wayfarers are a classic, and relatively universal, but they're really being used more as a placeholder for this look.

Then you have that bag. Really, this is a sweater and jeans look that you have elevated with a couple of key accessories. The bag is a big one. Not into animal print? No prob. The goal here is to use accessories to pull the look together, update it, and polish things off a bit for what would have been your run-of-the-mill daytime look. Go with a neutral if you're feeling, well, neutral. Or bring in a print, etc. This is the addition that let's you make the look your own and just gives good style street-cred. You know how it is. You see the look, then you see the bag (or shoe, or both) and you think, "Wow, ok, she knows what she's doing." That's what's going on here. It's simple, see?

The ONE thing you need to know about this look Rectangle body types is, you don't want to have that sweater steal the show. Don't let a knit cover up your body too much. Hiding behind your clothing never works. Instead, go with a more fitted sweater option or just layer a blazer or streamlined black jacket over this one.

The top: You cannot, I repeat, cannot go wrong with this top. The top is universal, and Rectangle body types, that means you're all set. The wide neckline flatters and lends itself to some serious earring action if you're up for it. The tapering in at the waist is also perfect for accentuating, or in your case, creating a more proportionate silhouette, and it's black so yes, it goes with everything.

The bottom: Every woman needs a well-tailored, perfectly fitting pair of black pants in her closet. They don't have to be over $150, or $100 for that matter. Ok fine, you can get a great pair for less than $70, tailor them, and wear them to death if you know where to look (cue: the Closet, link below). Just make sure this essential is in there. You can get SO much use out of these pants, and once again, the cut is a wide-leg one so it's pretty universal to all types unless you're petite (walk away if you're petite and go for something a bit more fitted/straight leg/boot cut). The tab waist, the slight flare at the hem, all  of it is causing a swoon-like reaction over here, and Rectangles, you should feel free to join in. These, are, gorgeous, and completely essential to have in your core wardrobe.

The rest: Black, black and more black can get boring. The kelly green clutch throws a colorful wrench into the equation, and thank god for that. A little color is important. It not only allows you to show who you are, but it can also brighten someone's day. Color therapy is a real thing, might as well start in your closet right? If you have color on the clutch, you can keep the shoes toned-down with a neutral that in this case, comes in the form of a faux exotic print. The pant is going to cover up what you have on so don't make this part into a science project. Not worth it. The belt draws in the narrowest part of your body, the waist (see below for the one thing you need to keep in mind if this isn't the case). The sunglasses are chic, glamorous, and very you-mean-business-but-you're-going-to-look-good-taking-over-the-world. And finally, the cuff, should you feel your inner Wonder Woman clawing to come out. This is a power cuff ladies. Use it for good.

The ONE thing you need to know if you're a Rectangle body type attempting to pull off this classic look is, should your rectangle shape be very column-like and you have little to no definition at your waist, drop the belt. The belt may end up bringing attention to a part of your body that distracts from creating a balance in your proportions. How will you know? Try on the belt, look in the mirror, if your waist doesn't look significantly smaller than your torso and hips, there's no need for the belt. Don't go in another notch by the way. You're going to want to be able to function normally in the look (i.e. breathe) so if the belt cuts off your air supply, you're trying to make yourself work for the look. No no, stop that, and flip the fashion script. Make the look work for you. See? Ah, exhale. That's better.

The top: Could it be any easier than this top? Nope, well it's possible, but for the sake of nailing home the point that this is probably one of the most universally flattering tops out there, we'll stick with n-o, no, it just doesn't get much better. The neckline, flattering. The sleeve length, classic. The color, um, it's black so you KNOW you'll get use out of it. The fit along the torso, slimming. Gold stars.

The bottom: Every woman needs a classic black pant in her closet, and yes, that includes you Hourglass body types out there. You can do this for well under $100 too, just have a tailor in mind and make sure you get the pant fitted to you, not the other way around. The leg is a little wide, but still follows the leg line which is exactly what an hourglass should strive for. You have a naturally balanced silhouette so why obstruct that with a pant right?

The rest: Black, black, and more black can be a little 'snoring,' (spoken out loud in a nasal, snoring voice for added emphasis). Use the clutch to pop it up a bit with color. Kelly green? Sure, why not. Metallic something? Absolutely. Animal print? Meow. Have at it. Just make sure to balance out whatever you have going on in the handbag with the shoe. Less is more, let one of the two shine and have their cameo. We suggest you give the handbag it's moment because let's face it, the shoe is going to be covered up by the pant anyway. Speaking of the shoe, we kept it neutral with a subtle, faux, exotic print. Easy enough. The belt, well as an Hourglass, you just going to emphasize what you're working with so keep it to make the look a little edgier, or drop it if you want to simplify for the day. It really can depend on the day, time of the month (you know exactly what I mean), mood, and then some. Go with your gut. To cinch or not to cinch should NOT be a science project.

The cuff revs it up a bit and takes it into the Wonder Woman realm. That's your power cuff. Use it for good and not evil please. Oh and of course you're going to want black-out shades to conceal, keep it chic, glam it up a bit, oh right, and shield your eyes from the blinding rays of the sun out there. Even if it's an evening look, some of us are out the door while the sun's still shining. For those ladies, sunglass-it-up. For the Alaskan women out there, some of you have six straight months of sun right? You need sunnies, and bad. Granted, your native terrain probably won't lend itself to an open toe, wedge sandal, or pants that don't wick away snow and water, but hey, at least we've got the sunglasses covered right?

The ONE thing you need to know about this look as an Hourglass body type is, less really is more. Just because you have a the black clothing canvas to work from, does not mean you need to cover every inch of you with something. Sure, there's the Coco Chanel line, "remove one item before you walk out the door,' or something like that (loosely quoting here), but which piece is the one left on the closet floor for next time? How DOES one choose? Think of it this way, if you have a couple of bold accessories (couple=2) you're good. Hair, nails, makeup, they all come into play. The more you put on, the more confusing it will be for anyone to really find the beauty in the entire look. Sure, you're gorgeous, but you don't want to send onlookers into a tail spin when they're checking you out? Not the good kind of tail spin, the dizzying, overwhelming, toothpaste aisle (so many tubes of toothpaste, why are there so many, I can't handle the choices, I'll just crouch down into fetal position for a minute until my heart rate gets back to normal) tail spin. Go with a couple picks that make the look your own, the pieces that make you feel like you (and that means good, or your best self) and leave it at that. You'll make plenty of time to wear the rest of your goodies. Patience grasshopper, patience.

The top: When it comes to the Apple body types, we usually steer you towards clean lines and classic cuts on top. Should there be a v-neck on top of that, bonus-round. This black blouse covers the clean lines, the classic cut, and sure, may not have a v-neck on it, but who needs it when you've got something this universally flattering to work with?

The bottom: The slight flare at the hem on this pant is perfect to balance out an Apple body type's proportions. You need a pant just like this in your closet. Go pick it up, get it tailored to you, and take care of it because it is gold. You can get warmed up on all of your shopping, pant and otherwise, in our virtual Closet of course (link below).

The rest: You are going to need some color on this one, unless you're going through a goth period, in which case, we will kindly direct you to another site because we just aren't skilled in that area. But for those Apple body types out who like a little color in their lives, play with the accessories. In this case, the kelly green clutch is where you can make the look your own. Go for your favorite color, print, metallic, whatever. You have options to pair back to the all-black clothing background. The sandal, although in a faux exotic which sounds bold, acts as a neutral in this equation. Not to mention the fact that it is going to be hidden under the pant hem, so definitely don't put too much styling energy into that. Keep it simple, neutral, and move right along. The cuff is pure power. It's bold, it's great for Apples because it brings the focus below your waist and will balance out your proportions further. Sneaky right? Ah, so simple, so easy. You've got to love it. Or at least we do, but by now that should be obvious.

The ONE thing you need to keep in mind when wearing this look Apple body types, you may be tempted to lay a necklace over this top. Don't. Earrings are ok if they're understated. If you're petite, lose the belt. It will just cut you off rather than elongate, and you'll most likely feel ridiculously uncomfortable sitting down in any position. Comfort is key to feeling good in a look. Don't sacrifice it completely (let's be honest, a four inch heel isn't necessarily comfy, but it's do-able, unless you live in San Francisco and plan on walking somewhere for more than two blocks) for the look or else the whole point of elevating your personal style goes out the window. Feel good in what you have on and get out there. It's totally contagious. Share the style love people.

The top: The blazer is a great layer to have on hand if you want a little additional coverage, to keep it pro-fesh (yes, more unnecessary abbreviating as the expense of the english language because it's just fun), and/or if you want to stay toasty. Keep in mind, you can easily lose this layer at any time. This dress was built for accentuating everything enviable and fabulous about an Hourglass body type. The print is fine, it will draw attention to your chest, but you're covered up so you're not crossing any lines. The sewn in waist detail is the most comfortable cinching definition a girl could ask for. Proportions=instantly balanced, or in your case, accentuated.

The bottom: Well, it's a dress so we'll discuss the hem. The dress is fitted through the thigh so there's a little narrowing going on here. As an Hourglass body type, if the bottom half of the look continues to narrow further, your top half will start to look disproportionate. A heel is a great way to fix this. It will elongate a bit, which we all love.

The rest: The bag stays neutral and at the perfect size for an everyday tote. The earrings are subtle mainly because you have a whole lot of look going on with that print. There's no need to distract from it with any additional statement accessories. Clean lines, basic shapes, keep it neutral. Speaking of neutral, cue the sandal. If you're heading into a fall look, close things off with a nude or putty/beige leather pump (preferably not patent). Or you could add in a heeled knee high boot BUT if you do that, go for browns which means you'll want to lose the blazer and make it a sweater dress look. Note: you can always wear black with brown, it just needs to be done in a way that makes sense. How do you know? You hit up this site, keep an eye on the latest Lookbooks, or contact us directly with your question. Problem-solved. Style stress, averted.

The ONE thing you need to know about this look if you're going to pull if off for an Hourglass body type is, the blazer should not fall past your hips. Why? Because woman, you have a shape that should be shown off, not covered up! And, B., when the hem of the blazer falls below your hips, or even worse, covers your bottom completely, your proportions are sent out of whack and it looks like you have more volume at the waist than you really do. The blazer is there to add to the look, not cover you up. Keep that in mind when trying this look out.

The top: Rectangle body types, use this dress well. The print and the built in waist definition are your friend. Make sure if you layer with the blazer that it isn't too boxy. You're going to want something with a bit of streamlining and construction to it that will create an hourglass-effect.

The bottom: The hem of the dress is pretty narrow. Usually we'd edge you towards more of an a-line or something that has a bit more volume. This works for two reasons: first, you have the waistline seam distinguishing between the top and bottom half, and second, there's a bold print that actually curves for you. Love when there's a little eye-line trickery right?

The rest: The nude shoe is just going to extend the long & lean'ness that is your Rectangle body type. Not super long? Not a problem, that's where the heel comes into play. Boom, height. You can also go with a black d'orsay pump (check out the Closet to shop more options, link below) as well if you want to polish it up a bit. From there, the bag and jewelry (just earrings in this case) are toned-down so you can let the print on that dress have it's day in the sun. No need to overwhelm here, less can be so much more.

The ONE thing you need to know to pull this look off is the previously mentioned note about the blazer. It definitely shouldn't be too boxy on your frame. You have a naturally straight shape that needs some great construction (courtesy of layers and seaming details in this look) to bring out your best. If the blazer swallows you whole, gets too boxy at the hem, or runs to parallel to your column-like silhouette, you're just going to go in the opposite direction of flattering. So, go for something a bit more body-conscious. It doesn't have to be super-snug mind you, some great seaming detail will do.

Hourglass body types, here's a look that will take your casual weekend routine and polish it up a bit in seven shoppable steps:

sources: 1 Zara Cotton Blazer (www.zara.com), 2 J.Crew Vintage  V-neck Tee in Stripe (www.jcrew.com), 3 MiH Jeans Marrakesh Kick-flare Jeans (www.matchesfashion.com), 4 Madison Harding Ben Woven Sandal (www.madisonharding.com), 5 MADEWELL The Transport Tote (www.madewell.com), 6 Tory Burch Jordan Wire Hoop Earring (www.toryburch.com), 7 NARS Semi-Matte Red Lizard Lipstick (www.beauty.com)

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: Don't freak out about the stripes. They're subtle, tone-on-tone, and will be partially covered by one of our favorite white blazers out there from Zara. Actually, you could leave the blazer out, keep the tee and jeans, and be perfectly fine. The stripes won't widen things, because you have that v-neck going on. The blazer is showing you how easy it can be to take a classic tee+jeans combo, and make it look on-point by pairing it with the right jacket from your clothing arsenal. Jackets are an investment, this one happens to be ridiculously well priced (thank you Zara), but overall, this category is one of the easiest ways you can take a basic look and elevate your personal style. They're one of the best tricks to have up your sleeve when you want a versatile wardrobe so shell out a bit more for the right piece. And yes, you can wear white after Labor Day. This goes for Hourglass body types and everyone else.

The bottom: Look closely at the fit on these jeans. Ok, got it? If you don't want to buy the pair pictured here, or you just want to keep shopping around as we women love to do (you can warm up with additional options in the Closet, link below), take a mental note. Hourglass body types, this is the shape you want to look for when you're buying jeans. Get them in a medium blue wash, distressed is fine, and get them in a dark blue wash as well. Hem the medium blue version for everyday shoes (possibly for flats if you're into those, or lower heels). Keep the darker washed jeans as is for heels. These will be your go-to daytime and wearing-out-at-night jeans. They are definitely on the essential shopping list for each season. Why? Because they will make your life SO MUCH EASIER. Sidenote: buy the size that is comfy and not the size you say you need to do another round of '6 Week Abs' to fit into. You'll be golden for Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall.

The rest: We're showing a great, pyramid heel sandal on this one. It's fun, you won't see much of the print under the jean, but you'll know it's there and they're versatile enough to wear in plenty of other ensembles. Bring the look into Fall with an ankle boot, black or brown. Either will work, and nope, you don't have to match the bag to the shoe. Another random styling myth.

Keep it clean and simple with an everyday tote. Speaking of simple, a subtle gold earring is perfect. The lapel brings some 'oomph' to the look, so let it do it's thing without much distraction. And if you're dying to inject some color, go with a bright red lip, or just a gloss if you're not into the whole big-girl-lipstick thing. Sometimes it can be more maintenance, we get it.

The ONE thing you need to know about the look Hourglass body types is, you absolutely do not need to wear a heel here if you don't want to or if you're dying to give your feet a break. Just put on the pair of jeans you have hemmed for flats and be on your way. Make sure they're a boot cut to keep things in-line with your naturally balanced proportions, and you're good to go. Keep it simple.

I'm a Rectangle Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear Running Around on a Weekday

Rectangle body types, here's a look that elevates any weekday style routine you have going in seven shoppable steps:I'm a Rectangle Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear Running Around on a Weekday

sources: 1 Zara Cotton Blazer (www.zara.com), 2 J.Crew Vintage  V-neck Tee in Stripe (www.jcrew.com), 3 MiH Jeans Marrakesh Kick-flare Jeans (www.matchesfashion.com), 4 Madison Harding Ben Woven Sandal (www.madisonharding.com), 5 MADEWELL The Transport Tote (www.madewell.com), 6 Tory Burch Jordan Wire Hoop Earring (www.toryburch.com), 7 NARS Semi-Matte Red Lizard Lipstick (www.beauty.com)

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: Rectangle body types can work a stripe like none other. Why? Because you have a natural column-like shape, so the horizontal striping won't draw the eye-line too far out to the left and right. Actually, the addition of a few curves on top balanced out with a little emphasis on your lower half is what you're going for, so, the tee works well to start things off. Bring in the white blazer with a dramatic lapel, and you bring even more volume/attention to the top. It's all fine and good because you have plans for the bottom half of the ensemble that will balance things out. The bottom: Speaking of the bottom, these jeans are perfection. They hug right at the hip, fit through the thigh, and flare out slightly at the hem. That small flare at the hem, even though these are a boot-cut, is going to be what flatters your Rectangle body type. They're a universally flattering shape in then denim world. The next time you're out shopping (or in shopping in the Closet, link below) you will be able to recognize that, yes, this is the kind of jean you should go for. The rest: Since you have a lot of black-and-white going on here, a little injection of color is called for It's as simple as throwing in a bright red lip. Easy. Blot to tone it down a bit, or opt-out of the lipstick and brighten things up with a gloss. Little touches like this elevate any look. They're small, yet effective.

The tote is going to be a go-to, everyday, wear it to work or running around, kind of tote. Perfect for travel as well (read: if your laptop is your traveling partner in crime, it just found it's new home). The pyramid heel on the sandal is THE most comfortable thing in the world. Fine, it's not a slipper, and yes, a wedge does pretty well too, but the pyramid heel is something to keep in mind if you want some height that will get you from point A to B without wanting to cry your eyes out (read: if you've ever felt like wearing a three inch platform pump through the streets of Manhattan running to market appointments or [insert your agenda here] was a good idea only to find yourself buying two dollar flip flops three hours in at the closest Duane Reade, you know what I'm talking about). A subtle earring finishes things off. Every woman should have a little something like this in her closet that isn't a statement piece but isn't a stud either. This is your middle-man earring. Know it, love it.

The ONE thing you need to know when you pull off this look is that you want to keep the jewelry super simple. You may be tempted to throw in a necklace or larger earrings. Fine, a hoop is an option, but less is more. The lapel and the striped v-neck tee bring plenty to the table without having to add anything else. The goal is to keep your top half balanced out with your bottom half, and Rectangles, that means you need to create emphasis on those two opposite poles of your body. It's easy to do, you just want to be wary of how much you're adding into the mix. Follow the look above as a guide and go from there. Above all, you should feel good when you leave your closet and walk out into the day so take this inspiration, make the look your own, and hit the ground running (um, because you actually CAN in those shoes! ah-mazing).

I'm a Pear Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear Out on a Weekday Running Around

Pear body types, here's a look that will upgrade any weekday look in 7 steps:I'm a Pear Body Type, Looking for Something to Wear Out on a Weekday Running Around

inpost_featinlkbkOCT

sources: 1 Zara Cotton Blazer (www.zara.com), 2 J.Crew Vintage  V-neck Tee in Stripe (www.jcrew.com), 3 MiH Jeans Marrakesh Kick-flare Jeans (www.matchesfashion.com), 4 Madison Harding Ben Woven Sandal (www.madisonharding.com), 5 MADEWELL The Transport Tote (www.madewell.com), 6 Tory Burch Jordan Wire Hoop Earring (www.toryburch.com), 7 NARS Semi-Matte Red Lizard Lipstick (www.beauty.com)

2endofpost_NOTESFROMINDUSTRYINSIDER_edited-1

The top: The striped v-neck tee combined with that blazer from Zara (current obsession over here) is a great way for the Pear body type ladies out there to bring focus to the top half of the look. This is exactly what you want to do, and there are plenty of ways to pull that off without going overboard. A simple stripe and dramatic lapel combination does the trick in this case.

The bottom: These jeans are universally flattering for pretty much every body type and that includes the Pear body type. You want to hug your curves, they're fabulous and should be celebrated (right? let's start the revolution where women actually have great things to say about their bodies as opposed to the opposite), you just want the entire look to be balanced out. These jeans pull that off via the wash, the fit through the thigh (no added bulk, not too tight, just right) and then the slight flare at the hem which will draw the eye down past the hips and balance out the volume you have going on, on top.

The rest: Every girl needs a basic gold and silver earring that isn't a stud but also isn't a statement earring. They come in handy all the time when you want to go out during the day and need a little something to polish a look off or elevate things a bit from your run-of-the-mill basics-on-top-of-basics look. The red lip is a welcome pop of color back to the black and white going on. Why NOT wear a red lip during the day? Seriously? Why not have fun even if you're running an errand or picking the kids up, or just grabbing a cuppa (the recent overload of British lit is rearing it's head)? Just because your agenda is nothing all that new doesn't mean you can't mix it up a bit and make the mundane interesting. Right, all that from a red lip. Whew. On to the classic brown tote that you can carry your life in. It also happens to be the perfect travel tote. Finally, the sandal which can be swapped out for a brown ankle boot when fall comes around, or even a comfy black pump that also has that amazing invention, the pyramid heel. This heel is a go-to for SO many clients because it will add height (flatter) and is actually comfortable (kind to your foot as you walk from point A to point B). Fashion myth, no longer a myth. And, go.

The ONE thing you need to know about this look Pear body types, is that when it comes to the jeans, follow the guidelines here. You definitely want a solid wash, something that leans more towards dark than light, and none of that whiskering please, thank you (those little horizontal stripes at the hip crease denim houses put on distressed jeans). Extra pockets are off limits as well. The name of the game is streamlined because that's exactly what you want to do when it comes to your lower half so you can balance out proportions, flatter your shape, and then go out there and show it off. The red lip is going to help with that by the way. It's practically like wearing a super hero cape.

The top: Hourglass body types, this top works for two main reasons, first, you're going to balance it out with the bottom half of the look or else it would be a little overpowering to your top half. Second, because it should hit only slightly below the waist and not run past your hips (i.e. don't use this as coverage for your bottom; why would you want to cover up one of your best assets anyway?). You're also going to want to pair this wrap jacket over a basic black or grey tee/tank. Either will do.

The bottom: These jeans are a fabulous shape for you to go for if you don't already have them in your closet. The wash here is dark, but you could also go with a medium, more distressed version when it comes to a daytime look. Overall, the shape of these jeans are going to flatter your hourglass proportions like none other, so make sure you have them as a go-to in your wardrobe.

The rest: If it's warm out, go with a sandal of your choice that is either black  or neutral. In this case, the wedge is both, but it's going to be covered up by the hem of the jeans so it's not a big deal. Put your energy elsewhere. You could swap that sandal out for a neutral (a beige or butterscotch would be ideal, and black would work but it's not the first choice as it is a little severe back to what it a warmer look) pump or boot.

The tote is a classic to have on hand. This is your workhorse tote that you can beat up during the day and will take the punches, not to mention, it will look good doing it.

Finally, the question we ALWAYS hear over here is, "what jewelry and accessories go with this look?" It's a great question and worth asking because a couple of small additions will elevate your style and update any look you can pull out of your closet. In this case, we went with a chain bracelet (depending on the fit of the jacket, this will either be covered completely, peeking out here and there, or a nice little accompaniment at the end of the sleeve), and a bold statement ring with a gold, vintage vibe. This is where you get to personalize, pick something you love, and throw it into the mix. It shows thought and makes instantly look like you know what's up when it comes to your personal style. The sunnies here glam it up a bit. Aviators would bring it into a more American-sportswear vibe, and Ray Bans would take it borderline 'hipster' (but to pull off full hipster you'd need a skinny jean of course). See? One piece can change it up that easily.

The ONE thing you need to know when pulling off this look for your Hourglass body type is, make sure with the wrap jacket, that you don't have too much volume in the way of extra fabric. The look is cozy, but it's still clean and it shouldn't come across like you're wearing a robe. Keep that in mind when you 're out and about trying on (or on-line browsing the virtual shelves of our Closet, link below). You will definitely always want to wear a heel with this one or your bottom half will struggle to stand up to your top half, read: proportions will be out of whack.
