The culotte is back for Spring and very few of us are excited...
Rightfully so. The word "culotte" a. sounds weird, and b. is not an easy look to pull off. But that doesn't mean you should toss the trend aside. The addition of a heel is going to be essential, and opt for a less 'clunky' one. Keep it neutral to elongate your leg line (go with your own skin tone or close to it), keep the heel thin unless you have plenty of height in which case a wedge or stacked heel works, and go with something that flatters your shape on top. It doesn't have to be super tight, but something fitted to counteract the fullness in the culotte will flatter.
Note: I'm going with looks that will flatter your shape. If you go with the trends, what is universally appealing to the eye doesn't necessarily apply. You'll see high-fashion moments that throw volume on top and bottom, but for the case of what my goals are on this site and with my styling clients, I'm sticking with the basics. I'm sticking with what just works and is simple...Up to you though. Here's one take on how to pull off this cropped trend:
